I was playing with an xep file last night changing the metamorph type to
get something I liked. I got a few ideas for future exploration, but
then I realized that the changes I was making was on a holon that was
free, unlinked, and hidden. According to the manual, if I am reading it
correctly, that should not happen. The holon in question is 7 of 9
(insert Star Trek Enterprise theme music here :) ). The 8th holon is
unlinked, which may also be a clue to this. If I link it, the image
disappears, and it also disappears if I hide the holon. Is there a set
of circumstances or settings that would allow the other holons to
inherit from an unlinked free and hidden holon? In case it makes a
difference, "Hide Parent Shape" has been selected for all holons.

Alf, I think this hidden-and-free holon can have influence by extending
another holon to it

DOH! Quite correct Juliette. The 8th holon is extended by 7. Even though
7 is unlinked and hidden I guess by making it the extender holon, it
has an effect.

I have seen this kind of thing before and it is rarely the account owner
doing it on purpose :). I figured you got hit with a worm, trojan, or
some such virus that decided to mass email your address book. I decided
to warn people against the site since Firefox warned me - one more
reason to stick with Firefox :). Hope you got your account back in one
piece :)

Thanks.  I did get my account back in one piece...after the viruses were
quarantined.  My advice to anyone that went to that link...run your antivirus as
soon as possible.

Subject: Picture mapping on to an iterated cube

I again need help.
I continue to have a problem with picture mapping on to an iterated
cube
I can repeatedly create a cube, iterate it with a second holon and map
an image onto all faces and see the image in the preview window but
when I render the image disappears from the faces and is replaced by a
checker board. Anyone had a similar problem?
There appears to be something I am doing / not doing

I create the cubes and map the image and it appears on all faces in
the Preview window
Rendering Tab and set the render size
Render New
Picture window opens and rendering starts but no image on the cubes,
just white cubes on a black background
If I go back to the preview window the face image has been replaced by
the checkerboard
Thanks for any (polite) suggestions.

Regards
Brian

Hi Brian

You shall set the rendering size before mapping. Each time You change
the rendering size You have to do that.

Perhaps if you can post the raw file here, others can try the render and/or
decipher the setup to look for any errors.

I have not seen this error before but then have not setup an iterated cube with
pics either.

Thanks for the replies to the problem which still exists for me. I
want to have a series of cubes showing a logo on each face
Here are the steps I have followed in my last two attempts after I got
the impression that somehow the file size of the image used for the
background was involved.

Holon 1
Rot x =30 Y=30
Pos X = -80
Reposition boxes all ticked
Metamorph Style Cube scale 3

Add Holon2
Pos x =30
Rot Z = 30
Max iteration = 5

I get an iterated cube with various faces on view

Select Holon 1
Set Render tab. Here I used render size and my enlarged logo image
size the same: (probably not important)
Picture Tab
File/Open Pic Choose image to go on faces
Overwrite B/G OK
Main Window
Colour Tab
Holon 1
Method Metamorph Map to B/g pic
Check Picture map defaults icon
Holon 1 shows image on all faces
Select Holon 2 Colour tab
Method Metamorph Map to B/G image
Map from Inherit all

Now in Preview window all the cubes show the logo image on all visible
faces

Check Render tab settings, all unchanged ( If I had used a smaller
file – less pixels - and created a new B/G . the render size is
changed on the Render tab to the smaller image size!!
Render New

Picture window opens and rendering starts and shows a black background
with the cube outlines but checker board on all faces

Thanks for your interest. Any advice will be most welcome.
Regards
Brian

Hi Brian,

when you Render New, does the picture size change at all?
And when you stop the render, does the Background Picture still exist?
If so, does it still contain your logo picture?

The checkerboard pattern only displays if the background picture does
not exist. The background picture is only closed if the render size (width
and height fields, not the dropdown box) is different from the picture size
when you Render New.

I can think of one thing that might be causing it. If you set the width and
height on the Render tab, that doesn't take effect until you either Render
New or click the Change Size button next to the height field. So if you
just edit those fields, then go to the Picture window and open a picture
file and choose not to change the picture to fit, it is cropped/tiled to the
current picture size, not to the new size in the Render tab. Then Render
New will change to the new size, erasing the background picture.

For picture mapping, I recommend either:
1. set the picture size on the Render tab and click the Change Size
button, before opening the picture file, or
2. just open the picture file and choose Yes to change the size to match.
Keep this size unchanged for the render.

Regards,
Garth

.xep included
check out the settings..the key is the render size.
once you set the background pic and say yes to the fit to dialog box
the render size will appear in the rendering tab.
leave the size blank and it should pick up the size from the original
pic you used.
will post the pix on the other group.

I can now render and get an image on all cube faces. I hope it lasts because I
am not sure what I am doing different.
I have one more question.
The logo image is actually 600 X 600
After I have created the iterated cube image with the logo on each face, I set
the render size to 2000x2000 because I want to "render big" and reduce the final
image size to 500x500 in PSP to reduce "jaggies".
Render New immediately changes the render size to 600 x 600 and I get very
obvious jagged lines.
How can I prevent or minimise this?
Special thanks to Garth, Bob Q, Claus, Doug S and Dinese for your interest and
help.
Regards
Brian

impretty sure the original pix needs to be as large as the final render..
otherwise it may be tiled...
or stretched..
someone else have another workaround???

Hi,

I was wondering if future version of XD might be able to automate the process of
setting up concurrent rendering?

At the moment, I am running one instance of XD per core on my render nodes. It
works great, but is quite a tedious procedure to set up on several
rendermachines..

Recently I have noticed that Krakatoa (for 3dsmax) has the option to
automatically start as many instances as you have cores in your PC.. With just
two 8-core machines, you already have a whopping 16 instances that can run...!
Just think what you could do with 10??? :)

It sure would make rendering out those long, beautiful, evolving Xenodream
animations much more fun to setup :)

Best,

Martin

Thanks, Bob.
Merry Christmas and season's greetings to all.

I discovered some issues with mesh export for 3D printing that have
proved tricky to solve.
