Hi,

Those of you who like to test beta versions, or like to do me a favor,
please test this version:
http://home.snafu.de/tilman/tmp/xenubeta.zip

There is not much that is new. I have included a segment that was
previously only on request, which deals with "foreign" URLs. But I'd
like to be sure that everything else still runs fine as usual.

I am running a online shop for a local firm and I thought Xenu would be
a good way to help make a google sitemap but when I ran it on the site
it came up with thousands of links and seems like it was going in
circles. Anyone else got experience of using it on Open Commerce site.

You should try to find out why it is going in circles (or rather, adding
URLs again and again). Could it be a session id?

Good news: according to virustotal.com, McAfee no longer considers Xenu
to be malware.

Its got Session Ids so its likely that which is causing issues. I tried
to do a scan on it last night. Got 31,644 URLs and it got up to 17,991
before I stopped it. The site only has about 300 products.

You might try to enable cookies (see on the xenu website), but make sure
that you aren't logged in or so, so that it doesn't order or delete
something.

No... I have no experience with encryption programming (although I'm a
heavy user of encryption software), and I'd want to store the password
encrypted in the INI file, and never display it again.

So lets consider this:
You spend maybe 1 minute every week / month to enter that ftp password.

compared with

I spend a day or two to understand the windows encryption API, or try to
find an example at codeguru/codeproject.com, and integrate it into Xenu.

Understood Tilman. I assumed you had it that way for security purposes, not time issues. An I undestand time issues for sure.

Thanks anyhow.

Hello,
is Tilman reading here ?

My
Feature Suggestion:
a)
Please provide a loadable website definition file ( = configuration file )

as typing in the "exceptions" each time is annoying ( after you offer
exceptions, thanks for that ). And thinking about proper exceptions is hard
work, so you have to write it down anyhow - why not in a configuration fle ?!

So that a non-technical expert might run XENU monthly/weekly ect, by just
running Xenu and loading the website file prepared by an expert.

I think its time now that Xenu gets serious to be used "automatically".

b)
Please provide a way to kill processes QUICKLY, when a user wants to abort Xenu.
Now there is the modal window which explains that 1000 processes are running.
This might be true, technically, but does not help the user to get rid of Xenu
quickly.

It helps to kill Xenu several times, then Windows askes if it may abort the
whole stuff :-). But this is of course no "clean" solution.

Sincerely
Rolf

They are loaded after you have typed in the URL, or got it from the drop
down box.

press STOP, this is near the PAUSE button.

If the processes are not stopped then, then it means there's a bug
(seems to happen with some ftp jobs, i.e. the background process dies
and xenu doesn't get notice)

I'd like to second Rolf on his request.
There is the file Xenu.ini with all the information, and I prepared it for
my users accordingly, so that they can start their linkchecks without
worrying about restrictions.
But it is a strange mixture of preferences, history, settings etc, and every
time a check is run it is changed by Xenu.
So while it serves some of the purposes that Rolf is asking for, it is not
quite as straightforward as it could be.
I would prefer a separation of the file into different files, in particular
one file for each website that is checked with all the additional settings
needed and which remains unchanged by Xenu (unless preferences are altered).
My Xenu.ini now has 55KB and it starts to get a little confusing.

All the best
Thomas

It seems that there's a bug in my software with links like this one:

<a
href="http://www.dctp.tv/#/meinungsmacher/udo-vetter-lawblog">interview</a>

I just throw away everything after the #, so I would spider to
http://www.dctp.tv/ , which shows a different content.

Does anybody know the meaning of a # that appears "deep inside" an URL,
and what would the correct logic to differentiate it from the classic
'#' as explained in
http://www.w3.org/Addressing/URL/uri-spec.html ? Could it be "it doesn't
count if the '#' is before a '/'" ?

If so, what about this URL
http://www.ftd.de/auto/bilder/:galerie-die-fiatisierung-von-chrysler/50059172.ht\
ml#utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss_feed&utm_campaign=/
where the content is identical to this URL
http://www.ftd.de/auto/bilder/:galerie-die-fiatisierung-von-chrysler/50059172.ht\

That's not a bug in your software, it's a bug in the website. The hash sign (#) in a URI is a reserved character and a URI with a hash sign (#) should retrieve the same document as the URI without the hash sign and everything following it (the fragment identifier). From RFC 3986 (highlight added):

4.4 Same-Document Reference

When a URI reference refers to a URI that is, aside from its fragment component (if any), identical to the base URI (Section 5.1), that reference is called a "same-document" reference. The most frequent examples of same-document references are relative references that are empty or include only the number sign ("#") separator followed by a fragment identifier.

When a same-document reference is dereferenced for a retrieval action, the target of that reference is defined to be within the same entity (representation, document, or message) as the reference; therefore, a dereference should not result in a new retrieval action.

The specification does not provide for any exceptions for characters (such as "/") after the hash mark, so they must be considered to be part of the fragment identifier. The W3 document you referenced concurs.

This is almost 5 years too late, but I finally had a look. This library
just about compressing or uncompressing one file.

What I'd need, is a C source code that can look in a .jar file, and can
tell what's in it (just a directory + file list).

Thanks, I had a short look at the text files. I was even able to compile
it (on the first attempt!) and get unzip.exe. When I have more time I'll
try to isolate what I need (I have to chose from 21 source files).
Thanks again!

I've now made a change as described in the paragraph above. Better late

and "inactive" controls weren't disabled and reset when needed). Sorry
for waiting so long for something so easy and useful.

And no, you still can't save your settings in a "project file" or
similar as explained in your mail from 4 Jan 2010. But I'll keep that
mail.

This was really huge. I think that I found something small:

And I also made a new beta that can work with a class in an APPLET

Hi

Scheduling things sounds contrary to the normal cycle of test repair test. That is you would surely test using Zenu after you have carried out some changes. Other tools you should consider using, as these monitor you site under there own schedule or are event triggered, they are;

I am not sure if I will see the picture that I have pasted showing number of visitors and where they are located.

This web page
http://www.aotc.net/Chronology.htm

has this HTML

<meta content="text/html; charset=unicode" http-equiv="Content-Type">

My software / Windows considers "unicode" to be CP1200, which would be
fixed 16bit characters, but the page is obviously made of 8 bit
characters.

Firefox claims that it is ISO-8859-1. ("show page properties")

is the statement charset=unicode correct, does it make any sense?

Does firefox assume ISO-8859-1 because unicode does not make any sense?

For this field, there is no such charset as "unicode", so, no, it doesn't make any sense. Here are the valid values for charset:

Firefox probably makes its best guess at the character set. I don't know how, they might do that, but one method is probably shown in the Mozilla source library.

Firefox is happy with considering the page to be Unicode (UTF-8).   There are at least two types of Unicode – UTF-8 and UTF-16 – recognized by Firefox..

Right, but the point is that the meta tag Content-Type charset=unicode is just plain bogus. The page referenced was, no-doubt, hand coded.
