Subject: Version 1.3.8 released
geo4497
Send Email Send Email

I have released Version 1.3.8, the best is CSS, slightly improved
behaviour and design for mail URLs, and a few bugfixes.

new features in this release of Xenu's Link Sleuth:
http://home.snafu.de/tilman/xenulink.html

Please save the previous version of XENU.ZIP "just in case" :-)

Major improvements:
19.6.2010: check css @import statements within <STYLE>...</STYLE>
            check url() elements within <STYLE>...</STYLE>
	    check url() element within STYLE=
(dedicated to The Gorgeous Princess Victoria of Sweden, whose
wedding to Clark Kent contributed that there's really
nothing on television besides herself and the soccer
             world cup :-) )
20.6.2010: parse css files similar to <STYLE>...</STYLE>

Minor improvements:
1.7.2010: sort "broken page-local links" section in report
3.7.2010: url property dialog now resizeable
6.7.2010: mailto with empty rest => "mailto:", not "mailto:@".
24.7.2010: mailto:name%40host.com => mailto:name@...
25.7.2010: all mailto: URLs of a host with successful DNS lookup are set
to "skip type"
27.7.2010: dito also for previously failed mailto: URLs of that
successful looked up host
27.7.2010: light green color for "mail host ok", which replaces text
"skip type" for mailto:
7.8.2010: renamed "maximum level" to "maximum depth"
14.8.2010: GraphViz only for "ok" links

Misc:
20.6.2010: changed link counting method, now in AddUrl
4.7.2010: clean possible memory leaks when finishing; FreeLibrary() for
DNSAPI.DLL
7.7.2010: changed toolbars slightly, preparations for VS2010
20.7.2010: for VS2010, expand application class with virtual INI
functions because I hate the registry
15.8.2010: "#" as error (not in public release)
24.8.2010: DLL security: fully qualified path for LoadLibrary()

Bug fixes:
20.6.2010: Lower case in check for .gif, .png etc
23.7.2010: corrected bug in change from 25.5.2010 "set recent URL list
to 100 instead of 10"
1.8.2010: correct bug about CCriticalSection usage for ServerMap and
CharsetMap
2.9.2010: fix for false alert in VS2010 buffer overflow check

Dear Tilman,
itīs fine that css-files are under control now too.
But there is a mistake.
In my css are lines for background-urls whiche are not active because they are
in comments.
These lines will be controlled too and missing files will be remarked.

Further i have a wish for xenu-result window:
In older Versins it war possible to order result by clicking result-column by
teh way that red urls (errors) are on the top)

In 1.38 mailto-links in green appear upon.
is it possible to deactivate email-webserver-check or to change sort order?

greetings and thanx for this great tool
Wolfgang

Send me the URL where this happens... I'll have a look into it.

This is because it is alphabetical.

If you just need the red rows, why not use Ctrl-B ?

Tilman: If you just need the red rows, why not use Ctrl-B ?
Me: because i didnīt recognize this function yet!

Me: In my css are lines for background-urls whiche are not active because they

Timman: Send me the URL where this happens... I'll have a look into it.
Me: i corrected them.
They were in a comment-Block like this:

a {
   display: block;
/*
 	 background: transparent url(../images/icon_config_load.gif);
*/
   margin: 3px 0 0 0;
   padding: 0 5px 4px 22px;

Ok, so you don't need a new version right now. Anyway, I'm now filtering
them, i.e. the bug will be fixed in the next version. Thanks for
pointing me to this!

Hi Tilman,
... i know it isnīt but sometimes it looks like.

Unlikely there is no regular opportunity to manupulate the http-Header of Xenu.
Therfore some pages return "forbidden request" instead of regular result during
XENU touches them (e.g. http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/RSS)

Is ther some chance, to make XENU-Request-Headers temporary changeable by
changeing options?

greetings
Wolfgang

No... because this would go against the wishes of those webmasters that
don't want Xenu to access their sites.

One would also ask why "do people want to use Xenu on Wikipedia". Due to the
way that Wikipedia is extensively cross linked, if Xenu did run, then you
would get *every* page on every Wikipedia in one go, which must have a
impact on the server. If you want to download every page then there is a
special way of obtaining a database dump (compressed) for each Wikipedia.

Well, some pages have the odd reference to Wikipedia - inevitable at times.
Ditto things like Google |News, which usually also returns a 403. Personally
I let it all happen but skip over all those 403 errors.

Ok, wikipedia was my worst example (but the best known).
We do handle several Link-List to forein friendly motorbike-websites (for
example Clubs).
We donīt link www.mydomain.com eachtime, sometimes it si neccessary to link
direct to a pag like www.mydomain/home.htm becaus of misconfiguration of der
Webservers.
If the do change their page-structure f.E. home.htm isnīt avalable index.html
instead itīs easy for us to recognize and to change on return of 404. But
returning "forbidden request" i have to check each page by opening in browser.

You'd need to talk to these websites... sometimes, its these errors are
not even on purpose, but the result of poor php programming. I've often
have had support requests from users who have php-based sites and have
no idea what they're actually doing.

Did anyone try to run Xenu with Sandboxie? Does it work? I'm thinking
about mentioning it on my web page so that paranoid people can use Xenu
too :)

Hi Tilman,
another little wish.
I use Xenu successfully to check several sites.
Unlikely XENU does only recognize the last 10 configuratons.
To hold more configurations it is neccessary to have another copy of XENU.
Is it possible to drill out XENU to recognize "n" configurations or to load and
save different xenu.inis using one application?
This will be very helpfull for me.

best regards
Wolfgang

Get the latest version, which shows more than 10 URLs in the dialog.
However even the previous versions did remember more than 10
configurations. (Through the INI file)

Subject: A different question about broken links
hartford_bruce
Send Email Send Email

I have a different question regarding broken links reported by Xenu.

My website is http://crmvet.org. When I run Xenu against it and produce
a report, it lists broken links by the page they are on, which is great
and very useful. For example:

http://crmvet.org/biblio.htm
	 http://www.kimopress.com/
	   \_____ error code: 12002 (timeout)

Which I interpret to mean that the link to www.kimopress.com on the
biblio.htm page is not working. So far, so good.

But it ALSO lists broken links that do not appear to be on my website at
all. For example:

http://archives.cnn.com/1999/US/12/08/king.assassination.01
	 http://archives.cnn.com/1999/US/12/08/king.assassination.01/
\_____ error code: 404 (not found)

http://cnnstudentnews.cnn.com/2000/LAW/06/08/henry.avants
	 http://www.cnn.com/studentnews/2000/LAW/06/08/henry.avants
\_____ error code: 404 (not found)

This looks to me as if Xenu is reporting a broken link on the
archives.cnn.com and cnnstudentnews.cnn.com sites. Am I misunderstanding
this? If not, why is Xenu reporting on broken links that are not on my
site?

Thanks.

Our email addresses on our website are now reporting as errors with 'No such
host'. Why was it necessary to introduce the mailto domain name check in v1.3.6?

I can't see a good reason as all of our email addresses
(at)naturalengland(dot)org(dot)uk all work fine.

This new check has messed up our Xenu report. It's now full of mailto errors we
don't need to take any action on.

I'd like to see this mailto check removed in next version or at least an option
added to disable this check please.

Hi,

I have a simple question. Over the past months even years I have been busy with
projects which caused me to not do updates to programs that were not necessary
to update.

Anyway my question is simple. I have been using Xenu 1.2e for years. It appears
to do everything I need it to do. Gives me the reports I need for a wopping 2
websites with not style sheets.

So basically is there any reason for me to read through all of the messages
looking for the history of updates? Is there really any reason to update to
1.3.8?

I have a different question regarding broken links reported by Xenu.

My website is http://crmvet.org. When I run Xenu against it and produce
a report, it lists broken links by the page they are on, which is great
and very useful. For example:

http://crmvet.org/biblio.htm
     http://www.kimopress.com/
       \_____ error code: 12002 (timeout)

Which I interpret to mean that the link to www.kimopress.com on the
biblio.htm page is not working. So far, so good.

But it ALSO lists broken links that do not appear to be on my website at
all. For example:

http://archives.cnn.com/1999/US/12/08/king.assassination.01
     http://archives.cnn.com/1999/US/12/08/king.assassination.01/
\_____ error code: 404 (not found)

http://cnnstudentnews.cnn.com/2000/LAW/06/08/henry.avants
     http://www.cnn.com/studentnews/2000/LAW/06/08/henry.avants
\_____ error code: 404 (not found)

This looks to me as if Xenu is reporting a broken link on the
archives.cnn.com and cnnstudentnews.cnn.com sites. Am I misunderstanding
this? If not, why is Xenu reporting on broken links that are not on my
site?

Thanks.

Hi,

I have a simple question. Over the past months even years I have been busy with projects which caused me to not do updates to programs that were not necessary to update.

Anyway my question is simple. I have been using Xenu 1.2e for years. It appears to do everything I need it to do. Gives me the reports I need for a wopping 2 websites with not style sheets.

So basically is there any reason for me to read through all of the messages looking for the history of updates? Is there really any reason to update to 1.3.8?

That's all.
Thanks

I'd say yes, if only because you don't lose any functionality and you might gain some... And if you don't use the new functionality, nothing lost other than the time it takes to install it...
Can't recall of the top of my head if there are any major bug fixes (doubt it), or if there are speed improvements (more likely).
I'd update if only because of all the hard work Tilman puts in !!

Just my $0.02

Well, Xenu says they don't apparently... does your DNS server not work
properly?

An alternative would be that you put "mailto:" in the exclusion list,
that might also do it.

See in the report, the redirection list. You probably link to these CNN

This really depends on the people. I'd always recommend to update, even
if you don't have CSS. There are a few security updates. Some make the
report more confortable.

A compromise would be this: if you have a second PC, e.g. notebook or
netbook, run the latest version on your websites and look whether it
provides something new in the report, or finds new broken links that it
didn't find before.

I can't see a good reason as all of our email addresses (at)naturalengland(dot)org(dot)uk all work fine.

Do you obfuscate your email addresses at all?

This new check has messed up our Xenu report. It's now full of mailto errors we don't need to take any action on.

I'd like to see this mailto check removed in next version or at least an option added to disable this check please.

You can add an exclusion and it won't check for them. (I do this for email addresses I have obfuscated)

Hello Tilman,

this could be the same issue as in my mail from 2010-05-20 (Very External Links Checked).
I might be due to the information in Xenu's report. E.g. I got

and found that I linked to
which in turn redirects to
while http://www.oberlin.edu/math/ is out of my range.
Could Xenu's information somehow be changed to reflect this situation more clearly?

Best regards
Thomas
(and thanks for a great product!)

Sigh... this issue has really come up often in all these years, so maybe
I should really do something. Its a design issue, mostly. I can't place
all the URLs that link to the "mysterious" URL because it could be many,
and there might be a whole chain of redirections.

What would be a solution?

A small note like this?

Broken links, ordered by link:
http://archives.cnn.com/1999/US/12/08/king.assassination.01/
error code: 404 (not found), linked from page(s):
     http://archives.cnn.com/1999/US/12/08/king.assassination.01
     (Attention: the URL above redirects)

1 broken link(s) reported

Broken links, ordered by page:
http://archives.cnn.com/1999/US/12/08/king.assassination.01
(Attention: the URL above redirects)
     http://archives.cnn.com/1999/US/12/08/king.assassination.01/
\_____ error code: 404 (not found)

1 broken link(s) reported

Or a different text, like

(Attention: see "List of redirected URLs" to find out more about this URL")
or
(Attention: enable "List of redirected URLs" to find out more about this
URL")
with an internal link to the section that deals with that URL.

Then I'll probably get many mails from people who disabled that list in
the report but don't remember how to enable it :-(

Hello Tilman,

sorry about the mail format, I wasn't aware of the mess it creates!
Anyway, there should be a difference between
-- links on my site that fail
-- links on my site that are redirected
-- links on my site that are redirected to a failing URL

For me, it would be easiest to have the failing redirections clustered with the
working redirections and not with the errors on my site, since I will have to
work on the URL that is first redirected and can't do anything about the wrong
redirection itself. In particular, I would need to know *my* URL that causes the
trouble, rather than the one on the distant site.
I don't know if it is possible to keep track of working and not working
redirections when checking URLs, but something like that would be my preferred
solution.

Cheers
Thomas

I'm thinking about rewriting Xenu in a machine-independent language, and
I think that Java is the best choice. I'm not saying that I will
actually do it, so its not even vaporware at this time.

The next question is: client or server (like LinkTiger)?

Server:
- dependent of server, i.e. of me
- security issues for server
- passwords would have to be uploaded on my server
- cost for server bandwidth
- cannot check intranets

Client:
- independent of me
- dependent of client bandwith
- retries as much as wanted
- can check intranets

Please tell me more arguments that are pro/against Client or Server.

Tilman

From my point of view as a home user rather than a professional Java on my PC is fine. I happen to use Sun's OpenOffice and that runs just fine no issues. As far as any runtime, OS or virtual machine goes Java is very widely used and consequently stable.

The two web hosts, btinternet and tiscali, that I used come with my past and present telephone accounts have been reliable for a decade or so but don't have any scripting language support. The only issue that arises using Zenu on either web spaces is that all the files are reported as orphans this issue arose in the past year or so and I have not reported it before.

The other feature I sometimes use is to check the webpage on my PC before uploading it. Consequently the only place for Zenu is on my PC but then I am a non-paying home user grateful for what I get.
