That kind of reminds me of that segment in The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy:

He reached out and pressed an invitingly large red button
on a nearby panel. The panel lit up with the words
"Please do not press this button again"

Anyway - don't delete the temp folder again.

I'd used Xenu for many happy years, until the machine it was installed on
crapped out.
I've just downloaded the latest version and run it against my web site,
www.greatdecals.com, and it found nothing. No links, no nothing.
I also ran it against another web site I'm involved with, and that worked
fine. Any ideas?
     Thanks.

The index file has two mysterious bytes (maybe the utf16 magic sequence)
at the beginning, and apparently this confuses a microsoft library that
my software is using. Remove that.

I edited and re-filed a half-dozen or so web site files and corrected the
problem. Thanks a million, Tilman!

Sorry, my answer was not really correct, as the rest will show.

Use "save as" in notepad, and instead of "unicode", choose ANSI (which is the
iso-8859-1 mentioned in your HTML, or almost)

I tried this, and the resulting TXT file was only half the size. So what you had
was unicode text, i.e. two bytes per character. Its probably not illegal, but
highly unusual.

Good Morning.
I am experiencing some seious problems with my website
www.vacuumcleanershop.com - mainly a drop in traffic which seems to coincide
with the large number of files/pages the Googles' Webmaster Tools sees as "Not
Selected" when it crawls my website. The website contains approximately 2500
pages, yet Google tells me there are close to 11,000 pages that are "not
selected" in the index.
Xenu did find some problems that were related to a social networking script I
had installed. I removed that script and those problems went away. However, Xenu
is also telling me that I have approximately 7300 orphan files. Again, this is
from a site with only 2500 pages. Most of the so called Orphan Files are what
look to be legitimate url's in the format:
http://www.domainname/directory/URLname.htm so I don't see how they could be
orphans.
I got similar results using another program called InSpyder to check for
orphan files and it ran for 3 hours until I finally gave up. Some of these files
were also legitimate looking but many were malformed with six or more
subdirectories before the html page.

Thank you in advance for any help,
Paul

Hi,

The best is that you send me ( tilman at snafu dot de ) a .XEN file,
and a report of what you did. Then mention one or two examples of an
orphan file, that you think isn't, or doesn't exist at all. Note that -
as the report tells you - "Links that aren't spidered (e.g. webforms and
dynamically generated links) will appear as orphans in this list."

I recently moved my website www.vacuumcleanerhop.com to a Linux server from a
Windows server at GoDaddy.com. Now, when I run Xenu I get the following error
during the Orphan Report section of the report:

"Error 87 while moving to remote FTP directory '' "

Everything I find refers to this error as a Windows system error. I do not
remember gettiing this error when I ran Xenu on the previous windows server.
My website is an ecommerce website with a WordPress blog installed in a folder
called /wordpress

Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance,

Hi,

The best is to try to connect from the command line ftp client, and then
do "cd" like you would if you'd search yourself for orphans.

I wonder if the ftp root is empty in the dialog box?

Well, you say it was working recently. So either you or your ISP /
server provider changed something... try accessing the ftp server
manually and see what happens.

Sometimes it helps to check / uncheck the passive mode.

Error 12002 and Error 12003 are Microsoft WinInet Error Codes (see
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/193625) for:

    12002 ERROR_INTERNET_TIMEOUT
                The request has timed out.

    12003 ERROR_INTERNET_EXTENDED_ERROR
An extended error was returned from the server. This is
typically a string or buffer containing a verbose error
message. Call InternetGetLastResponseInfo to retrieve the
                error text.

At least the Error 12003 gives a little bit more info:
> > Error 12003 while moving to remote ftp directory 'www/htdocs/AfterHours/':
425 Unable to build data connection: Operation timed out

I'm finding regular scanning with Xenu really useful as part of quality
assurance on multiple sites. I'd like the ability to be able to use Windows Task
Scheduler to schedule scans to be run automatically. I notice there are
references to a command-line version and think this may be exactly what I need.

Is the command-line version still available?

Xenu 1.3.8 is used to check a local disk which has htm-driven documentation that is distributed via CDs. No problems with W2K but when Xenu opens index.htm under XP SP3 it completes almost immediately and every file is reported as an Orphan.

The behavior has has not been a problem because it was easy to KVM to a W2K machine and run Xenu there. That convenience is about to end, so am now faced with making Xenu functional under XP SP3.

Apart from the OS, the primary difference between the two machines is the level of Explorer being run and the versions of WININET.DLL (the starred dll is in /SYSTEM32). I do not know the version numbers of the DLLs, but can list the dates and size from a DIR.

W2K is Explorer 6 and has two versions in 3 directories:

  06/19/2003  12:05p             466,704 wininet.dll
* 08/29/2002  07:14a             585,728 wininet.dll

XP is Explorer 8 and several versions in 13 directories.

  04/14/2008  01:42 AM           666,112
  03/08/2009  12:34 AM           914,944
  05/06/2010  02:36 AM           919,040
  09/09/2010  09:57 PM           919,552
* 09/09/2010  09:58 PM           916,480

If the problem is WININET.DLL, which version/date is needed to run Xenu on XP and how can it be replaced?

I've tried delete/replace the 9/9/2010 dll with an earlier version but XP reinstates 9/9/2010 .

If not WININET, what else could be a cause?

Hi,

I don't know about wininet.dll versions. The best approach would be to find out why Xenu "completes almost immediately". Could it be a difference related to international charsets?

I've been pursuing all kinds of reason for the immediate completion but none
have made any difference. W2K is reading the same file over the LAN and
processing successfully. I've tried the reverse, moved the directory to W2K and
run Xenu from XP but still get immediate completion.

Here's what has me bamboozled:

- W2K 1.3.8 looks at index.htm, generates the list of links, and completes with
a valid report
- XP 1.3.8 looks at index.htm, completes immediately with index.htm as the only
entry in the list of links, and completes with a report that lists every other
link as an orphan

I've done uninstall/re-install of Xenu twice with no difference in behavior.

Microsoft's penchant to change the names of settings between releases is
annoying at best but on charsets went far further by turning clear and
unambiguous settings into muddy and obscure.

W2K
  Control Panel/Regional Options/Advanced
    English (United States)
  Control Panel/Regional Options/Advanced
[grayed out] Western Europe and USA (default)

XP
  Control Panel/Regional and Language
    English (United States)
  Control Panel/Regional and Language/Advanced
    [grayed out] 10000 (MAC-Roman)

I don't believe charset has anything to do with the problem, based on the
assumption that charset is the same between the two though I can't really be
sure. W2K's "Western Europe and USA (default)" is unambiguous but XP's "10000
(MAC-Roman)" is not.

The reason I picked on the WININET.DLL is that Xenu has had issues in the past

I'd still search for another cause. Please save your work into a .XEN
file and send both to tilman at snafu dot de. This would show me the
settings.

Hi all,

The cause was a broken registry on the XP system, the MIME type "text/html" was missing. Thus the file was not looked into.

Am 03.03.2013 17:48, schrieb Porter Woolcott:

* 08/29/2002  07:14a             585,728 wininet.dll

XP is Explorer 8 and several versions in 13 directories.

  04/14/2008  01:42 AM           666,112
  03/08/2009  12:34 AM           914,944
  05/06/2010  02:36 AM           919,040
  09/09/2010  09:57 PM           919,552
* 09/09/2010  09:58 PM           916,480

If the problem is WININET.DLL, which version/date is needed to run Xenu on XP and how can it be replaced?

I've tried delete/replace the 9/9/2010 dll with an earlier version but XP reinstates 9/9/2010 .

If not WININET, what else could be a cause?

Please check whether the files are referenced in the scan itself, i.e.
that they aren't part of javascript. Also be careful about upper and

All better now:

I think I found the problem.
http://www.greatdecals.com/Netterfield.html
links to

so the link is external.

Avoid absolute links. Use a global change to change

Hi,
german special characters like ÄÖÜ in URLs seem not to be supported by 1.3.8.
Crawling www.friedrichsdorf.de many external URLs are not resolved by this XENU
version.
Browsers like Firefox/Chrome/Opera and "not"Browsers like IE will follow thes
links without problems.

My exemplarily HTML-Code looks like that:

Hi,

Please try the current beta:
http://home.snafu.de/tilman/tmp/xenubeta.zip

Some links now work, some (2 - schulamt and schornsteinfeger) are
broken. All are displayed ugly because they use UTF8 in an iso page. The
broken links, when tested with a browser, don't bring a visual error
message, they bring the homepage ("herzlich willkommen").

Yes, I can't do international domains. I tried it once, but there is a
multithreads-related bug in the library I used, and I don't have a time
to find it.
