How can I exclude some extension of files (for example; jpg, gif, asp, ) from being checked by Xenu?

Use the "wildcard" version, it allows to use expressions like

"*jpg" instead of URLs.

"Invalid path" usually means that it is a directory, not a file.

You might want to activate the option "list local directories" in the
advanced options.

It means the link is pointing to a location outside the website root directory.

From the FAQs:

5. Why does Xenu's Link Sleuth (TM) report http://www.site.com/../page/index.html as broken?

The key is the "../" part. It means you have e.g. a top level page that links to a page in a directory above, which doesn't exist...”

I have lots of web pages with affiliate links (Amazon, CJ, eBay,
etc.). I need to check these pages for broken links but I don't want
to violate the programs' terms of service. Does anyone know if this is
an issue? Can I get around this by using a proxy sever? How difficult
is it to do that? Is there a how to guide anywhere?

Lots of questions! I appreciate any help that anyone can offer.

A user pointed me to a problem with the exotic fonts improvement, which
can be seen if you check
http://www.adventure-inn.com/ch/description/
with the current beta version:
the titles of image URLs are garbled in the Xenu window. The reason is
that I kept the chinese title, but reset the charset. I've now made a
bugfix that the charset is reset only for HTML files with a body.
(Because the body can have its own charset definition)

Hi group,

I have used Xenu since years and thought I could rely on it, but
accidentally link checking a single page in Homesite editor
yesterday I found that the target (<a name="top">) for an internal
link (href="#top") was missing, and missing in all pages of the site.
Yet checking again with Xenu 1.2j everything is reported as fine
while it is not.

Is this intentional and documented someplace or a bug or just not
supported or deprecated by some self-declared web authority?
Searching the web for "xenu linksleuth named anchor" has not
brought any enlightenment.

I hope I don't have to check 15K files one by one in Homesite!

TIA,

Sean

These are checked, but only at reporting time. Thus, look at the report
:-)

(If it isn't found there, send me the URL)

Indeed! I had a feeling I had seen these reported in the past, yet
the current version is not that new that I would have expected
something having been lost recently. I barely ever load the report
anymore for a) it takes an awful lot of time to load, even without
sitemap, and b) I don't like it to run and connect IE to the web
when I always use Opera for web connections. I suppose it is not
hardcoded, but using the default browser. Making Opera the
default in the past had raised issues with Windows, maybe that
would not be true any longer.

Anyway, thanks for pointing me to the right thing, glad the
checking is still there.

Hello All,

I am evaluating Xenu to see if its something we can use to check the
links on our website. So far the tool looks good but I am having a
couple of issues trying to get the links under a node(+) checked.
The page listed below has links to under the node(+) but they arent
being checked, the link next to the node(+) is being checked but not
the ones under it. If you expand the node(+) you will see the files
under their. The site I am checking is:

Sorry, I didnt realize you had to be logged into to see that book,
can you try going to knovel.com and then logging in with this
smartescript/test. Then paste the link:
http://knovel.com/web/portal/basic_search/display_EXT_KNOVEL_DISPLAY_b
ookid=901

You should be able to see the (+) and when expanded the links will be
under their.

Ok, one problem was that the "?" was missing in your mail. When using
it, it works without login too.

http://knovel.com/web/portal/browse/display?_EXT_KNOVEL_DISPLAY_bookid=901

However I suspect that the page is dynamically generated. I am unable to
find a link with "5465981" in the HTML source, despite having a link to

javascript:NewWindow('http://ww0.knovel.com/knovel2/Show_Text.jsp?SpaceID=0&Vert\
icalID=0&SetID=5465981&BookID=901&NodeID=5465981&Associated=true',
'TextWindow','yes','Text_Bookmarks');

when viewing it in the browser.

Hi,

You may have covered this topic already and I apologize to everyone if
so. I've been using XENU for years and am very appreciative of what it does.

Last year, I created a "redirection" of one of my domains to a subfolder
of my main domain, thinking that this would not affect the XENU link
program. I've just discovered that it does the following (I will use the
real URLs)

Main domain (#1): http://istrianet.org/
Secondary domain (#2): http://istro-romanian.com/ - this is redirected
to http://istrianet.org/istria/linguistics/istrorumeno/ (#3) which has a
number of subfolders

If I try to do a XENU scan of #1, I do not know if it checks the
folders that are linked to either the existing or redirected path of # 2..

If check on # 2, the XENU report tells me that only 7 files out of the
71 in that folder have been scanned, and none of the subfolders are
scanned at all.

If check # 3, I get the same results as with # 1. I have also tried
using the "treat as internal" feature with no difference in any results.
However, If I do a XENU check of the individual subfolders of #3, then
there XENU gives the correct results for each scan, but that does not
solve the problem. domain scan.

Am I doing something wrong? Is there a way to correct this problem? I am
not technically trained so cannot do any sort of scriipting on my own.

Thanks,

Marisa

http://istrianet.org/
links to
http://istro-romanian.com/index.html
which is NOT a redirection, but an ordinary page, and it links back to
the main domain. However
http://istro-romanian.com/index.html
is not downloaded, only checked for existance if you do #1. Solution:
"include" http://istro-romanian.com in scan #1.

However all this isn't even needed, because a scan to
http://istrianet.org/
does reach
http://istrianet.org/istria/linguistics/istrorumeno/ anyway, i.e.
without the "include".

By redirection, I mean that when I type "http://istro-romanian.com" in the command line, it redirects to the folder "http://istrianet.org/istria/linguistics/istrorumeno/"
However
http://istro-romanian.com/index.html
is not downloaded, only checked for existance if you do #1. Solution:
"include" http://istro-romanian.com in scan #1.
I have done that, but must be missing something..
However all this isn't even needed, because a scan to
http://istrianet.org/
does reach
http://istrianet.org/istria/linguistics/istrorumeno/ anyway, i.e.
without the "include".
I appreciate your response, but I am still confused.

What I would like to do is use XENU on the individual subfolder just named, just as I am able to do on all the other subfolders on my site. Yes, the scan reaches the folder, but unlike other folders which give a complete report, it reads only 7 out of 71 files in that folder and ignores all its subfolders even when I use the "include" feature.  I know there is something I must am doing wrong here. I have used the "include" feature in all the scenarios I previously mentioned and it makes no difference in the results. Do you have any other suggestions?

Thanks,

Marisa

Hi,
You may have covered this topic already and I apologize to everyone if so. I've been using XENU for years and am very appreciative of what it does.
Last year, I created a "redirection" of one of my domains to a subfolder of my main domain, thinking that this would not affect the XENU link program. I've just discovered that it does the following (I will use the real URLs)
Main domain (#1): http://istrianet.org/
Secondary domain (#2): http://istro-romanian.com/ - this is redirected to http://istrianet.org/istria/linguistics/istrorumeno/ (#3) which has a number of subfolders
If I try to do a XENU scan of #1, I do not know if it checks the folders that are linked to either the existing or redirected path of # 2..
If check on # 2, the XENU report tells me that only 7 files out of the 71 in that folder have been scanned, and none of the subfolders are scanned at all.
If check # 3, I get the same results as with # 1. I have also tried using the "treat as internal" feature with no difference in any results. However, If I do a XENU check of the individual subfolders of #3, then there XENU gives the correct results for each scan, but that does not solve the problem. domain scan. Am I doing something wrong? Is there a way to correct this problem? I am not technically trained so cannot do any sort of scriipting on my own.
Thanks,
Marisa

If you scan http://istro-romanian.com/ then it will check only URLs that
starts with http://istro-romanian.com/ , not URLs that start with
http://istrianet.org/ , or http://www.xenu.net or whatever. Unless you
include http://istrianet.org/ so that it gets checked as well.

Anyway, the truth is that you don't have a problem at all. Just scan
http://istrianet.org/ and it checks all your stuff including
http://istrianet.org/istria/linguistics/istrorumeno/ .

That http://istro-romanian.com has only 7 links is sortof true, because
the links all go to an external site.

I solved my problem by using internal links instead of external ones on that folder's index page!

Hi Tilman

Could the redirected URLs report be sorted alphabetically, in the same
way as the broken links report?

It would make it easier to identify and fix problems, by grouping
related redirects together.

Thanks

Better late than never: You can now run Xenu's Link Sleuth with an XP
look and feel. I tried this in 2005
http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/xenu-usergroup/message/445
but there was a problem with the "Tips" dialog. I made another attempt
yesterday and found the cause (a bug in the microsoft source code for
the "Tips" dialog). Anyway, this has been corrected, and I also
integrated the manifest file in the executable file.
http://home.snafu.de/tilman/tmp/xenubeta.zip

The behaviour on pre-XP windows versions should be the same as before.

Another advantage of the new version is that exotic charsets now display
correctly in the url property dialog.

Another goodie that I added is an abort dialog for the sitemap.

Good idea. I just did something. Send me (to tilman at snafu dot de) a
.XEN file of your work and the report that you get, and I'll send you
the report that I get.

So I did some database fixes and speed improvements to my site. Xenu is now able to scan my site effectively, problem is it misses 1000,s of url's.

The site is about 60,000 pages, it finds about 46,000. The site is very well interlinked.

Any ideas on how to improve Xenu's ability to spider more?

Check wether it is really "very well interlinked". Find out one URL that
isn't spidered, and the URL that is spidered from which it is linked.

Are you asking me to show you some links?

if so as an example, Every property should have 4 pages. A detail,
rates, photos & features:

http://www.vacation-rental-wonderland.com/rentals/Big-Bear-Lake/detail-286.html

http://www.vacation-rental-wonderland.com/rentals/Big-Bear-Lake/features-286.htm\
l

http://www.vacation-rental-wonderland.com/rentals/Big-Bear-Lake/photos-286.html

http://www.vacation-rental-wonderland.com/rentals/Big-Bear-Lake/rates-286.html

There a ton of URL's that only have one of those...

Like these 3 URL's. Only got one page from each house:

http://www.vacation-rental-wonderland.com/rentals/Blairsville/detail-379.html

http://www.vacation-rental-wonderland.com/rentals/Blairsville/detail-380.html

http://www.vacation-rental-wonderland.com/rentals/Blairsville/detail-63.html

Xenu does find the link to photos, rates and features of that house:
http://www.vacation-rental-wonderland.com/rentals/Blairsville/photos-379.html
http://www.vacation-rental-wonderland.com/rentals/Blairsville/rates-379.html

>
>http://www.vacation-rental-wonderland.com/rentals/Blairsville/detail-63.html

These are links to the details from 2 other houses of the same owner.
But the original page, even shown with IE, does not link directy to the
photos/rates/etc of these other locations, one has to click on the
first.

Or did I misunderstand you?
