Re: [xipf-talk] Re: Thoughts on xipf -- feedback welcome
The mozilla extension archive (.xpi), which is also a zip file, is probably another useful model for what you're proposing.
The other question that occurs to me reading through this thread is if there would be added flexibility in allowing optional pointers to external resources, like album artwork and lyrics (or in some cases the audio files themselves), in addition to having them be directly available as contents in the zip/package. This has the advantage of providing a lot of flexibility in packaging a collection, and the potential disadvantage that sometimes these materials won't be available because they've been moved or deleted, or a server is unavailable.
The other direction we've been thinking is to actually make the ZIP an
executable or package it as Java JAR, along with some sort of executable
handler. The handler would be responsible for "installing" the album
locally or presenting some sort of menu of options for
playback/exploration of the contents of the album. It may even be
possible for the format to contain players inside of the archive, so
that an album an be distributed and experienced in a complete standalone
manner. If we make any headway on this approach, we'll be sure to share
it here.
