Re: [xipf-talk] Re: Thoughts on xipf -- feedback welcome
I am still interested in this topic as well.
Back in 2000ish, i worked with a technology called Throttlebox which was a media wrapper (executable) that played .box files which contained various media formats and presentation data. A player was required to run these .box files. I still have the authoring app as I was was a reseller and consultant. But its outdated technology now. Here is a page that still exists which shows you what Throttlebox was (
throttlebox.com is no more): http://www.creativenewmedia.com/services/throttlebox.htm
Around the same time, I was involved for a while with a product called TK3, a multimedia ebook authoring and viewing software. http://nightkitchen.com/
Besides mutlimedia flash players/wrappers, I am looking forward to seeing how else we can evolve the need for media wrappers using current logical technologies. Great thread, thanks!

Observations:
- using directory structure as a protocol element is a time-honored approach.
- XPI separates out the install and runtime portions of the package.
- XPI gives the installer first-class status.
One other thought -- I can easily imagine a music package being XPI
itself, since XPI can have data files (for the media), chrome (for the
presentation), and an installer.
> The other question that occurs to me reading through this thread is if there would be added flexibility in allowing optional pointers to external resources, like album artwork and lyrics (or in some cases the audio files themselves), in addition to having them be directly available as contents in the zip/package. This has the advantage of providing a lot of flexibility in packaging a collection, and the potential disadvantage that sometimes these materials won't be available because they've been moved or deleted, or a server is unavailable.
So there would be a blend of static/local and dynamic/network
resources? Hm. For example a song file would be static, concert
listings would be dynamic... That makes total sense.
Hello all, I've been taking a rather small mental ice pick to the large iceberg that is xipf. I'd like to share my thoughts, and get some feedback. ...
