During an increasingly routine visit to Threadwatch.org (<
http://www.threadwatch.org/ >), I stumbled upon a blog post by Threadwatch's
proprietor Nick W discussing "folksonomies." (<
http://www.threadwatch.org/node/1206 >.) Nick's post harmonized quite well with
the stated purpose of the XODP Yahoo! eGroup in that it deals with "progressive
ideas for how the Internet should be indexed," so I think it only proper that I
use this post to give him the moral nod here on XODP for bringing my attention
to this topic.
As alluded to by Nick W, folksonomies are currently the fodder for much academic
debate, but one need not have an advanced degree in cognitive science to
contribute to the underlying meta data that creates folksonomies. Indeed, all
you need is an opinion on how to classify something, which everyone seems to
have. After that, the process of classification using keywords and keyword
phrases is somewhat automagical and decentralized. Needless to say, the
potential of this collaborative technique for indexing the Internet is nothing
less than enormous.
