Few people realize how much wasted energy use at home impacts the environment,
and makes us more dependent on foreign oil. Nor do they understand that they can
quickly reduce their energy costs substantially by a variety of cost-effective
conservation efforts.
Obama Gets It
President-elect Barack Obama has announced that energy conservation is a
strategic new way to help reduce energy costs for low income households. He has
promised to provide conservation contractors for 1 million poorer households to
reduce energy consumption and cut energy costs. This would represent a historic
shift in emphasis for the government, reducing people's energy bills instead of
helping to pay them. At the same time, it will create tens of thousands of jobs
for contractors to assist with conservation upgrades for these homes. This will
be part of the new presidents plan to create new jobs, reduce consumer energy
costs and at the same time make us less depended on foreign energy sources.
Global Climate Change
The scientific community agrees that increasing CO2 levels are contributing to
global climate change. But not all of this CO2 comes from industry and
transportation as many people assume. Households are responsible for one-fifth
of the energy consumed in the United States. A little more than half of the
energy used in our homes is in the form of electricity. The remainder comes from
natural gas, coal and oil. All of this CO2 takes its toll on our environment.
For example, the average home produces more than twice as much greenhouse gas
pollution as the average car. If you add together the emissions produced by
power plants that generate electricity, plus those from oil, and gas-fired
appliances, the average house is responsible for the release of 22,000 pounds of
carbon dioxide (CO2) each year. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection
Agency (EPA), this compares to poorly with a typical car's 10,000 pounds of CO2
annually.
Conservation and Energy Use
In many homes, we don't even benefit from a lot of the energy we end up paying
for. Unneeded lights, old appliances, poorly maintained Heating and AC systems,
drafty doors and windows and under-insulated attics, walls, floors, and
basements all take a bite out of the energy bill in almost every home. Studies
have also shown that two families living in IDENTICAL homes can have energy
bills that vary by as much as 100 percent -- this means that an occupants energy
efficiency habits and appliances can double (or halve) your energy bills.
Many people are reluctant to improve the energy efficiency of their home when
they might be moving out in just a few years, or they think the costs will be
too high for conservation efforts. But the published research is clear that
investments in energy efficiency are often relatively inexpensive, extremely
cost effective and also lead to higher home resale values.
A study published in The Appraisal Journal found that the market value of a home
increases by $10 - $25 for every $1 decrease in annual fuel bills. The study was
conducted by ICF Consulting with funding from the Environmental Protection
Agency. The research was conducted at a sample of over 16,000 housing units all
across the nation.
What You Can Do Right Now
Schedule an energy efficiency inspector audit of your home. My client's report
an annual net energy savings of $300 after implementing the cost-effective
efficiency recommendations from my audits. I offer my audits at no cost if I am
conducting a new purchase home inspection. Also, many utility companies sponsor
free, or reduced cost energy efficiency inspections. In addition, utilities
typically have a web based self-audit that the homeowner can complete to develop
their own energy efficiency plan. Most utilities also offer rebates on the
purchase of new EnergyStar rated efficient appliances and other conservation
materials and services. Contact your local utility provider for more
information. In California, visit the Energycheck website for a qualified energy
efficiency inspector in California.
energycheckup.com/content/findinspector.asp/.
A fast and cost effective way to reduce electrical costs is to replace current
incandescent light bulbs with the new generation of CFL energy saving bulbs.
Local utilities often provide incentives to retailers (including Cost-Co) to
sell these bulbs at very low costs. I recently found these bulbs for sale at
various retailers in California for less than $1 per bulb. Using these CFL bulbs
can reduce your electrical use and bill up to 20% alone. There has been some
misinformation about CFL bulbs emitting mercury during operation. These mercury
hazard claims are false. However, if a CFL bulb breaks, (since it has a very
small amount of mercury), it should be placed in a plastic bag, and discarded at
the proper facility where you would for paints or batteries. CFL technology has
been greatly enhanced: they turn on faster and last longer. However, they still
have not been perfected for dimmer light controls.
So be smart by making your home more energy efficient, at the same time you
will: save money, help the environment, and the economy, as well as reducing our
dependents on foreign oil.

A Canadian car that consumes no oil, no gas and runs solely on sunlight will be on display at the Canadian Residence in HancockPark, on March 6, 2009. Marcelo Da Luz, the creator and a solar enthusiast, has driven the car's flattened sheath floating less than three feet off the ground across North America, and has set the world's distance record for a solar-powered vehicle. The car, referred to as XOF1, will be arriving in Los Angeles, having driven over 11,500 miles using only sunshine as fuel, never being plugged into the grid, crossing the continental divide 8 times, driving on over 1200 miles of gravel roads, taking on snow, ice, and the low angle of the Northern hemisphere during the wettest summer of the past 30 years in the region. XOF1 has turned heads from Toronto to Vancouver and over the Golden GateBridge. Residents in one Alaska town called the police to report a UFO.

Hi-
We read your article in the San Jose Mercury News today. My 11 yrs old
son wants to see your car. Is there a way to find out where in Palo

I look forward to your reply.
in pursuit of solar,

I have had an exciting week! Here are some news reports from the last week of my life. I volunteered to drive Marcelo's support van behind him as he drove his solar car across Washington and Oregon. I really enjoyed stepping out of my ordinary role as a mom and even learned how to drive a van pulling a trailer again. (I kept looking behind me today for the trailer, too!) I had lots of fun talking to reporters and newspapers. Here are some news reports to check out, if you are interested!
This article was printed the day I came to Olympia to join Marcelo. He stayed with the mayor of Lacey (a town near Olympia) while he was there in the area, which turned out to be nearly 2 1/2 weeks because of the awful weather! http://www.theolympian.com/living/story/724840.html
This is from the Longview, WA paper I did this whole interview myself (there are some mistakes, so don't quote the facts and figures in it), Marcelo was too busy with other people while we were at Solar World in Hillsboro, trying to get some money from them! It didn't work, though :( http://www.tdn.com/articles/2009/01/16/top_story/doc496ff00a285f8561618499.txt
This photo is from downtown Centralia as we passed through, if you look in the passenger seat of the van, you will see me! We stopped at a shopping mall a little later to charge the batteries as it was a beautiful day! We then drove by Clif's school at 4:30 pm, just after this picture was taken: http://www.outdoorslc.com/story.php?subaction=showfull&id=1232042284&archive=&start_from=&ucat=5
Koin 6 TV did a television report at the 11 o'clock news on Thursday the 15th, but I am having trouble locating that to link up here. It was about 2 minutes or so long, I think.
A non profit organization called Solar Oregon hosted Marcelo and he did a presentation on Thursday, the 15th in downtown Portland at the Eco-Trust building. We actually put the car inside the building for the night, then brought it back out the next day (I think Dieter took pictures of it, I know I took a ton of them!) Here is the write up that Dieter published the next day in Solar Oregon's online newsletter. http://www.solaroregon.org/about/news_folder/zero-gallons-three-wheels-and-10-000-miles
This article was posted about Marcelo by SunStone Circuits, a circuit board manufacturer we visited. They put out a big sign and had a party when we visited (they were a small company) We got gifts (flash drive, t-shirts, hats) and a special guided tour, it was really cool seeing how circuit boards are made! There are lots and lots of inspections of quality, I was very surprised! I was even able to take some pictures that I hadn't looked at much, I got at least 6 to 8 Gigabytes of pictures and movies stored! (I was helping Marcelo take pictures for the documentary he eventually plans to make!) http://www.salem-news.com/articles/january152009/solar_ride-1-15-09.php
The very last on I am aware of was a reporter in Florence, WA the last place that I followed Marcelo to. It was 60 degrees and sooooo beautiful, truly a halcion winter day on the coast of Oregon! I cannot find this article online and am having my new friend, John Peton get it for me, his cousin lives in Florence and hosted Marcelo for the night. We strong armed John in the Pearl district on Friday in Portland to join the team and he brought me back to Portland late Monday night so I could catch my train on Tuesday from home. We picked up a nice retired gentleman named Bill in Salem on Saturday who stayed with us through Monday, too.
Bill and Laura, John Peton is a friend of Cari (Kari?) who is from Wenatchee and he also attended her wedding in Wenatchee, small world, eh?
I am sorry I didn't get to see most of you while I was there, it was a whirlwind trip, on the go with the absolutely beautiful weather you all had down there!
I have a lot of pictures and some journaling that describes the trip from my perspective, if you are interested in receiving my personal pictures and comments, let me know! I am thinking of writing up my experiences for a local monthly mailed newspaper, if I can get them interested in it!
I got this email from Laurie just over one week ago, it is kind of personal. I wasn't sure if I should share it with others or not but here it is.
It gave me an incredible boost of confidence to continue pushing just a bit more. Hope it will do the same for you.

The Power of One Man
Sometimes there are moments in your life where you have real clarity, ah “aha” moment when you realize something very profound about yourself or the world around you.The psychologist Abraham Maslow called these situations “peak experiences” and they are characterized by intense positive emotions during which a person feels unity with the universe.Such experiences leave the person with a great feeling of power, growth, and wonder. After such an experience, the person often appreciates life more, feels more spontaneous and is less concerned with the everyday problems of life.
Often these moments are inspired by the natural environment ;for example, hiking in a beautiful, sunlit meadow, standing by the mighty, majestic ocean, or gazing at a majestic, snow covered mountain.Other types of inspiration may be more of the everyday kind of life, such as watching a baby examine her hands and feet like they are the most fascinating objects she has ever seen. But sometimes, these peak experiences or moments of pure clarity are inspired by a person, by his or her actions, words, or deeds.
Such an “aha” moment or inspiration has just recently happened in my own life. The man who was the catalyst for such a moment is Marcelo da Luz.I learned that the word “luz” means “light” in both the Portuguese and Spanish languages.I immediately think to myself, “YES!”That is exactly what Marcelo has been to me and my whole family, a beacon of pure, bright, shining sunlight, warming us and filling us with renewed hope and dreams for our own future and the future of the whole world!
It is so easy to wallow in our own current situations of “doom and gloom” and to feel that there is no conceivable way that one person alone can possibly make a difference in this world.Marcelo’s life and calling has demonstrated to me that one person can make a difference in our own complicated lives, and even in the whole world! He is making a difference every single day by his example, and he inspires me to make a difference, too.
Marcelo has shown by pure will, determination, drive, and tenacity that one man (or woman) can, by the “power of one” change the world a little at a time!He achieves this every single day of the week as he drives his purely solar powered car across North America.Hopefully, he will soon be driving it down through Central and South America, providing additional people inspiration that one man can change the earth!Marcelo is a source of light and an inspiration to everyone, all over the world, indeed! The message heportrays is loud and clear, “Yes, I can do it, one person can change the world for the better!”
It is so easy to sit back and wait for others to do the work you know you should be doing!“It’s too hard to recycle, I don’t want to take the time.”“I don’t want to give up my gas guzzling SUV, those efficient cars are too small.” “I deserve a huge house.”“I must have closets full of clothes and shoes.”“I don’t need to help the poor, that is what the government does with my taxes.” “I don’t want to support alternative energy, it’s too expensive and will never replace fossil fuels.”“Why should I go without things just to help someone poorer than me?”
Instead of these rationalizations, Marcelo shows by example what we should be thinking and doing, “How can I do my own part to change the world?”“How can I inspire others to help me in this journey to make the world a better place?”“How can the world, especially North America, stop her dependence on fossil fuels?”“How can we harness more of the world’s natural energy resources?”“How can I stop the decimation of the rainforest?”“How can we work together as a world community to solve our problems?”
I have never met anyone in my life who so very quickly captured my hopes and dreams for the world and at the same time, gave me more hope for the future than I have ever had before!Marcelo has inspired me to believe this message (paraphrased from a popular kid’s cartoon,) “Can I change the world?Yes, I can!”If we all do our part, we can change and maybe even reverse some of the damage already committed to our beautiful planet earth.Yes, we can!
In the very short time I spent with Marcelo, he has been able to instill within me, and I believe my entire family, the belief that our actions matter, that one person’s examples and life can inspire many, many people, from all across the world. He has inspired all of us to try as hard as we can to do our part in helping out our amazing planet!
Marcelo has been able to achieve the wonderful success of traveling across more than 14,000 kilometers (10,000 miles) by the sheer force of his personality, his will, and his determination to be the change in the world that he wants to see!Wow, what a concept!Instead of just complaining about things you don’t like, actually get off of your duff and do something about it!He loves to tell school children, “There is only one thing between you and your dreams, yourself.”I hear those encouraging words and I believe them! The force of Marcelo’s personality and message enables you to cling on to these hopeful thoughts and dreams. You feel energized and hopeful, you know thatyou can change your own life and why stop there?Go ahead and try to change the rest of the world, too!How do you know this?Because Marcelo has achieved this goal himself!
He has engineered and created an amazing, sophisticated solar car that has traveled so far because he thought he could do it, and he did!Yes, he had the help of many, many people spanning the whole world. But, isn’t this how we solve all major world problems? We make a goal and then we ask the smartest, most innovative, most persevering, most supportive, brightest, most collaborative, most passionate, most caring and most hopeful people we can think of to help us solve the problem?Next, we implement the plan they recommend to us with their best advice. This is how Marcelo has achieved his amazing success. He believes in himself, and he believes in me (and you!)You can help him save the world, yes you can!
I have never felt such peak experience in many years, such a swelling of hope for the future that I have felt by being in Marcelo’s da Luz’s presence.Yes, I think that “light” describes him very well!Other words that come to mind are “warm,” “passionate,” “ strong beliefs,” “caring,” “determined,” “tenacious,” “full of faith,” “hopeful,” “innovative,” “creative,” and “compassionate.”Marcelo is all of these things and many more.He has inspired my entire family to do a much better job of trying to save our gorgeous world.
Thank you, thank you, thank you, Marcelo, for coming into my life and providing such a wonderful example for me and my family!I will never forget you and will forever be grateful for your shining example to us all.
May you continue to travel the world over and inspire and motivate all people to follow and achieve their dreams!Thank you so much for your message of hope, I can think of no other person that I have met in my life that has equaled your ability to inspire and promote a better future for our world!
A wonderful couple a meet in Wenatchee (Jim and Laurie) became great friends. They have been giving me a great deal of moral support to continue the with the project. As a way of helping out they created a news letter about the project. See it below.

Obama vs Schwarzenegger
Mareclo would like be part of Obama's inagural parade in D.C. or continue south to meet with Arnold Schwarzenegger. Right now he is in Lacey, WA near Olympia trying to work his way south in search of more sunshine and financial support to continue his journey. Which do you think; Obama, the Governator, or both?
X of 1 Sets New World Record
Marcelo da Luz and his Power of One solar project set a new world record for the longest distance traveled by a car completely powered by solar power on October 30, 2008. He beat the old record of 15,070 km (9,364 miles). Now, a new record is set with each mile that Marcelo is able to travel in his solar car. Click on the photo to go to an excellent article written on his accomplishment.
"Fill er up with sunshine"
Marcelo's solar car made page one headline news in the Wenatchee World newspaper on December 5th. As a favor to Jim and Laurie, he brought his car to Wenatchee to show to the local high school college and elementary school. The Wenatchee World also put together a video of the car in front of a 10 kW solar array in downtown Wenatchee.
Please click here to help support Marcelo's endeavors. This link will take you to his Pay Pal account where you can contribute any amount you choose. Your support is greatly appreciated and needed if he is to continue his journey. His success depends on supporters like you.
Please send money! Any amount you can send will help!
Would you mind if I recommended the CBC's Spark program have a look at this?

I have been having a lot of fun taking the solar car to schools, sharing the project and inspiring kids to follow their dreams.
Does it fly?
Cool!
WOW
I am still in Seattle gathering support to continue the journey. Keep your fingers crossed. The project is such an incredible educational tool, I look forward to driving it further. If you know anyone what would like to participate as a volunteer of sponsor let me know.
Here is a short video of my stop in Seattle by KiroTV
In spite of all the success of the project, I still don't have a sponsor for the tour.
I would love to continue driving the solar car and keep on inspiring people about the use of clean and sustainable energy. However, at the moment I only have support to go to Wenatchee, thanks to the local community.
From Seattle the solar car will be heading to Wenatchee. I have just been contacted by someone in Boulder, CO interested in having the solar car. Keep your fingers crossed.

We just arrived with the solar car in Inuvik. As I write this emails (sorry for the mass emails), we are just 3km from downtown Inuvik.
It has been a fantastic journey in many ways, a great adventure!
In some of the attached photos are images of the solar car battery being charged with the midnight sun, crossing the Rockies, a wolf next to XOF1, driving at night with the moon shining on the back ground, etc...)
What a challenge. XOF1 and crew took on hail, heavy rain, hurricane like winds, days and days of overcast weather, it cross the continent divide 3 times and just drove on the infamous and terrifying Dempster Highway all 760km of gravel at its worst since it was built 40 years ago in one of the most rainy summer in record. It has been a test of endurance for the solar car (5 flat tires and one broken front suspension) and crew (long days, cold, rain, long driving, etc...). Covering already over 7,800kms. The half way mark to setting a world distance record.
Anyway, we made it!
We are now 2 degrees above the arctic circle and we got here on sunshine.
We still have a long way to go. Yet, without a sponsor for the tour. Fortunately, everyone who learn about our story come forward to help and give us a helping hand and litle by little helping us get a bit further ahead.
XOF1 today at noon will have arrived to the most northern place in the world by road. The first solar car to drive to the arctic circle and beyond.
More updates are now posted at the project website under "newsupdate". There you can follow lour progress.
It has been an incredible journey, driving at night, rain, tornado like wind, detours, bad roads, overcast weather, etc...
Due to the late start of the tour, weather related and other delays compounded by the fact the most challenging leg of the tour is yet to come, Marissa and Evan will be returning from Edmonton so they can attend to previous commitments.
They have been great, they had never seeing a solar car until just a few weeks ago and took on the challenge, they became an excellent crew. I have been in good hands.
Our unplanned stay in Edmonton gave us the opportunity to relax and finally post updates on the website, we even played Frisbee, we have been talking about it since we left Toronto :)
While Marissa and Evan are getting ready to go home they are still helping me get the word out to find two volunteers to crew the support vehicle. We went to a local radio and TV station on Friday, the DJ "Fred" was very supportive. We haven't been able to find anyone yet.
A dry Dempster highway is already a great challenge, if we attempt to drive on it wet and muddy it would be even more challenging for the solar car thin tires. Divine intervention perhaps? all the delay we encountered helped us miss all the heavy rain.
What a great adventure. We met so many incredible people who opened their doors for us, showed support, kindness. It's been a fantastic memorable experience worth writing a book about it.
Updates are now posted at the project website under "news update".
The adventure continue...
Thank you kindly for all your support, you are making this possible.

Earlier today we had the solar car on display at the Distillery District (downtown Toronto), there was a Classic Car show with over 65 vehicles going back decades in automotive history.0
Photos attached.
As you can imagine the solar car was the darling of the show. We had such a great success that the organizers have already invited us to return to the event next year.
Special thanks to Rob, Louis who helped get the car ready for the display.
