I'm trying to Burn CD from Master on my Mac Mini 2 GHz Core 2 Duo with 2GB RAM
running 10.6.1.  The progress bar in my Offline Operations Manager fills up and
it says "Working..." but the operation never seems to complete.  I've left it
run in this state for a couple hours with no completion.

I'm using a registered Pro copy of XOWave and burning at 10x.

Any idea what I can try to get this master burned?

People who don't use your application will not complain. But I can
tell you that there is a big market (i.e. anyone using Pro Tools) for
a full-featured (i.e. ISRC codes etc.) CD-burning application which
can burn a CD directly from 24-bit split-stereo files. Peak (which I
own) and DSP Quattro (tried the demo) don't do it. I'm still looking
for something newer than MasterList CD that does. Please consider
this market as you continue development.

Because I use Pro Tools for multitracking and mix back into the same
session as the source files. I have all my markers etc. in the
session which simplifies navigation and re-defining regions in mix
files. I can import the mix track into a 44.1k session and retain all
that marker and region information. I can't see any feature of XO
Wave which I am missing in Pro Tools and which would entice me to
change my workflow, given the need to import the files and lose so
much useful information in the process. Not to speak of revisions to
the mix or part of the mix which are so simple when you stay in Pro
Tools for the whole process up to the final CD burn phase. That's
what's so great about MasterList. There are no extra steps. It's a
shame digidesign abandoned it, but this means there's an untapped
market there, and maybe I'm the only person who has "complained" but
I assure you, if you were to announce support of the features I am
looking for on the digidesign user conference or the DAW-Mac mailing
list, you'd be deafened by the roar of approval.

I'm not sure exactly what you're asking. You can certainly source 24
bit files, but, of course, you can't burn 24 bits to a CD. XO Wave
does, by default, dither to 16 bits, and, at the moment, it does,
unfortunately, require creating a master file rather than burning
straight to a CD, but this is a background process, so it's less
workflow intrusive than it sounds. I hope that answers your question.
We're planning to address that in the future, but so far there have
been very few complaints.

XO Does not read PT regions. Why not sequence in XO Wave? The editing
model is very similar to PT. Of course there are some differences
(real-time cross fades, eg). Try out the free version and see for
yourself. Alternatively, you could export the whole PT session as a 16
bit stereo file and import it into XO Wave, mark CD Tracks and burn
with dither turned off.

I'm not sure I understand, but it sounds like you have a system. I
think the best thing is for you to download XO Wave Free and try it
out for a bit. I think if you experiment a bit you can find a process
that works at least as well as masterlist, even if it's not sequencing/
mastering in XO.

I'd like to move past having to keep an OS9 machine running with
no-longer-manufactured SCSI CD burners, which MasterList requires.
I'm looking for a replacement. But until someone comes up with
another application which has the ability to burn CDs directly from
Pro Tools regions in 24-bit split-stereo files, which allows me to do
all my CD sequencing in Pro Tools and then burn without an
intermediate (export/import) step, I'll keep looking.

Just a side note to explain my workflow: if my source sessions are at
48k or higher sample rate, I just import the desired track(s) into a
44.1 24-bit Pro Tools session, which preserves all the region
information in the original session. So I do all my mastering at the
original sample rate, then import into a 44.1 session as the last
process before creating a CD playlist, which is then as simple as
dragging regions or audio files into the MasterList item pane, which
defaults to having each item as a CD track, although of course you
can add, slide, and remove track IDs at will subsequently.

Many, if not most, accented characters can be created in XO Wave, it's
just a few that are broken.

	 I've never actually used masterlist, but you've asked some great
questions. Before I answer them, I should be upfront about a what I
consider XO Wave's two biggest CD Mastering limitations:

* XO Wave can't handle some CD Text characters. These are just the
accented charaters that most CD Text readers ignore anyway, but it's
something to be aware of. This is due to Apple bug 4995799.

* It's not possible to create an extended pregap on track 1. This
prevents users from adding a "secret song" to track one. This is due
to Apple bug 4329057 so if you know anyone at apple -- lobby them!

XO Wave can work with source files of any bitdepth up to 32, as well
as floating point, without having to convert them. I'm not sure who
created the myth that you can't mix bitdepths in a workstation, but
you can and XO Wave lets you. Several rules are followed in XO Wave:
- Source files are never touched, except if need to convert the format
at import, in which case the files are copied, so the originals are
left in tact.
- Internal precision is maintained throughout the process until final
bit reduction, with is selectable as either dithered or not. In XO
Wave Pro, internal precision is selectable as either 32-pit floating
point or 64-bit floating point. If you use Audio Units, internal
precision may be reduced to 32-bit, since that's what they typically
use.

I don't know about masterlist, but there are some workstations out
there that do bit-reduce intermediates, for example a certain popular
workstation bit-reduces when processing fades. Every workstation that
I know of bit-reduces when normalizing. XO Wave does not.

Just to clear something up, XO Wave will feel more like a workstation
than a playlist-based program. It has a region list, not a CD items
list. It has tracks with full-blown channel strips for effects,
automation and so on, not playlists. This confuses some users at first
because they then think they have to manually place CD markers which
is a pain, but, in fact the Memory Locations Manager lets you
automatically create them: http://www.xowave.com/doc/window/memory.shtml

XO Wave does not directly support split stereo files. I haven't seen
that in a workflow in a long time. You could work with two tracks and
hard-pan them left and right, but I'll be the first to admit that
would be a pain, since XO Wave doesn't group tracks the way that Pro
Tools does (or at least used to). Since XO Wave Has stereo tracks and
supports stereo files, there's usually no need.

Anyway, once your files are imported, they appear in the region bin.
You can then drag and drop them onto a track. If you grab multiple
files, it will ask you if you want to import them sequentially on the
same track, with space in between them, and with or without new CD
Track markers and so on.

can mix stereo and mono, multiple sources (eg stems) and so on. I'd be

"padding" in XO Wave. I can't recall the exact value, I think it is a
less conservative 10 frames (about 1/8 second). It is not user-
selectable, but a great deal of testing went into this value. CD Track

interleaved source files, with a choice of dither applied at the burn,
leaving the source files untouched.

2. When loading a split-stereo or interleaved audio file into your CD
item list, you can select the whole file or a Pro-Tools-defined region
in it as the item to load.

3.You can mix split-stereo and interleaved files in the same CD.

4. You can define a crossfade type and length between each pair of
audio items.

5. It produces a text file track listing with CD-frame-accurate track
start and end times and track length, and total time.

6. It sets track start and end offsets to a user-selectable value
(default: 15 CD frames) automatically.

Does OX Wave do these things too? I downloaded the manual, but
couldn't tell. If so, I'll give it a try. If not, please include these
features in a future release.

One (hopefully final -- at least for now) note on this subject is
that it's useful to know all three of these techniques for checking
metadata because even if you're just checking your CD Text, the CD
Text to CD Info script for iTunes is a bit buggy (hugo discovered
this and contacted me off-list). Beyond the fact that sometimes it
won't read the data correctly, (especially if you tell it that you
want to see the data in text edit first), it's simply not designed to
read all languages and encodings of your CD Text metadata, so if you
really want to know if it's all correct, you'll have to at least try
option 2). Option 1) may frighten you, since it has the command line
in it, but it's well worth knowing since it will always work.

Also, if you want to verify ISRCs and MCNs, you must use option 1) or
2).

Since this comes up frequently, I should also mention something about
creating metadata in XO Wave:

Since a CD Master contains all data needed to create a CD (not just
audio data), you must create metadata BEFORE creating a CD Master.
Adding or changing metadata in the session later won't change the CD
Master. This is explained best this FAQ: http://www.xowave.com/doc/
faq.shtml#noISRC

	 In particular, make sure when you go to burn a CD that all the boxes
for the features you want are available (not "grayed-out"), or else
those things won't be burned.

On the mac, you have a few options:

1) if you are comfortable in terminal, you can use the drutil
command. Simply typing "drutil cdtext" (without the quotes) will spit
out the cd text info in apple's xml format. you can redirect that to
a file and read it in plist editor if you like. "drutil subchannel"
will give you all the mcn and isrc data along with a bunch of other
stuff you'll have to ignore. best to pipe it to less or redirect it
to a file and read it from there.

2) Inside the extras folder in XO Wave, you'll find a program called
"Read CD Metadata.command" that reads the data of the current CD and
shows them in text edit and plist editor. Not perfect, and it is
slow, but all the information is there.

3) Inside the extras folder in XO Wave, you'll also find a disk image
for a program called "CD Text to CD Info". Double-click on it and
drag 'em over to the installer. Once installed, you'll be able to
read CD Text in iTunes, although it still won't be automatic --
you'll have to select CD Text to CD info from the scripts menu when
you insert a disk with CD Text.

XO Wave News Is Coming....

It's come to our attention that some of you want to know what's going
on with XO Wave. It's been a while since a release, and I want to
assure you that despite some business-related delays, we won't be in
beta forever. Not only are we fixing some bugs for 1.0, we are also
doing some R&D for 1.1, so please send us feature requests and let us
know what's on your mind! More news will follow soon.

Sorry you're having trouble. Unfortunately, I haven't seen that
before so I'm not sure what's causing the problem. When you say XO
Wave crashed do you mean it got frozen, stopped playback or actually
quit?

Here are some suggestions:

* Quit XO Wave. Then run the terminal program (in applications/
utilities) and type this command:

   rm ~/.xowave/CookieMuxter

* Quit XO Wave, run Activity Monitor (in applications/utilities) and
make sure you don't have any stray processes such as XOmux, XOengine,
or XOgui. If you do, force quit them.


If those ideas don't work, perhaps you can send your logs to
support@.... Here's how:

- After XO Wave crashes, wait about 30 seconds. Type the following
command in ternimal:

open ~/.xowave/*.log

- once it pops up in Text Edit, Copy and past the contents of the
files into an email and send them to support@....

I am running the latest macbook pro. If that is of any help.
I installed a new version of XO wave, but the message appeared again.

What can i do?

	 XO Wave 0.19.7 (Beta) is now available for download from http://
www.xowave.com. It includes a few bug-fixes as well as some utilities
for reading CD Text and other CD Metadata -- great for checking your

Here's full change-log:

- fixed problem with track arm/disarm state appearing to change
during playback.
- fixed problem with running out of memory when creating new threads.
- worked around (to the greatest extent possible) apple's bug in
Latin-1 CD Text support.
- use Java 1.5 in Mac OS to avoid some issues with 1.4.
- updated copyright info.
- added two utilities for reading CD Metadata.

	 Happy Valentine's Day! It seems only fitting that a company with
"XO" in the name should do something on Valentine's, day, right? And
so, today is the day that XO Wave 0.19.6 is released! Don't worry, I
didn't do anything silly like make it all pink (maybe next year), I
just fixed a whole lot of bugs!

	 This release, the third release candidate for 1.0, fixes over a
dozen bugs, and also includes some minor performance enhancements. To
get the maximum benefit from the bugfixes, you may want to rebuild
overviews from old sessions by selecting "Rebuild all overviews" from
the region bin menu, and delete any autosaves folders in existing
sessions.

Complete changelog:
- fixed issue that caused XO Wave to appear as a non-universal binary.
- fixed issue with opening a session with missing session folder from
finder
- fixed issue with Envelope generator sometimes resetting target
parameter, which may have caused audio engine crashes or mistargeting
of EG.
- fixed bug that caused AAC exports to include video.
- fixed crash when creating new podcasting session.
- fixed some problems with pasting/cutting and so on to non-level
zero tracks.
- fixed possible crash caused by misfiring mousepressed/mousereleased
events.
- worked around apple bug that may have allowed Window menu items to
be called even when they are grayed out, resulting in the weird
situation of having an edit or mix window open, but no session open.
(apple bug 4990439)
- fixed problem that sometimes made redo unavailable.
- fixed bug that caused autosave to use the wrong number for the
month. Users may want to empty their autosaves folder after upgrading
to XO Wave 0.19.6.
- fixed bug that may have reset track channel routing when deleting a
track.
- fixed keyboard focus problem in mix window
- fixed bug that may have caused crash when saving after opening
multiple mix windows.
- fixed problem with overviews created while recording. Users of
previous version may want to repair existing overviews by selecting
"Rebuild all overviews" from the region bin menu.
- tweaked thread timing to improve GUI responsiveness.

I will send you (privately) a build of XOengine that will tell me
what arguments it's receiving. If you send me the output from that, I
