I will send you (privately) a build of XOengine that will tell me
what arguments it's receiving. If you send me the output from that, I
should be able to figure out what's going on.

It is a completely fresh install, with no previous components.
However, I removed everyone of the supplied libraries except
libjack-0.100.0.so.0, since on my system (Fedora Core 6) jack is
at version 0.102.

I should mention that the most likely cause of this error is that you
are combining different versions of XO Wave components. For example,
an old XOmux and a newer XOengine. Usually, the installer cleans the
old installation out and completely replaces it, but if you moved any
program components by hand, the installer won't have known about it,
and you'll have to delete the old stuff manually because you must
keep all program components at the same version.
If you've forgotten where you put things, you can try using commands
such as:
locate xo
locate XOengine
locate xowave
locate XOmux
to help find things.

That's very peculiar: you shouldn't see "XOengine is not a user

XO Wave 0.19.2 is now available from xowave.com. Aside from some bug-
fixes, this release adds multi-lingual CD Text support. There are
also some audio unit changes and some new preferences options under

navigation of the GUI has been improved, especially in dialog boxes.
Enjoy!
XO Wave Roadmap
Some of you may be interested in the "roadmap" for the next few XO
Wave versions. At this point, there has been a fair bit of demand for
a 1.0 with the current set of features because many of them, such as
CD burning, simply aren't available elsewhere. This means that from
now until 1.0, XO Wave releases will focus entirely on bugfixes. That
doesn't mean that there's no room for new features, but it does mean
anything big will have to wait until 1.1.
So what's planned for 1.1? That depends on you. Right now, the
biggest requests have been for DDP and native AU GUIs, so that's most
likely, but maybe you'd like something else as well. Maybe Blue-book
mastering? New session templates? Archive/consolidation/track
freezing? More built-in effects? Send me an e-mail: bjorn@...

XO Wave is more for production than composition, so it doesn't have
much in the way of looping (it has pro-tools style duplicate copy/cut
and superior cross-fades, but normally when people talk about loops
they mean something like Ableton Live). I doubt that you'll find a
single tool with both good looping and good video sync, but I could
be wrong about that.

XO Wavers,
XO Wave version 0.19.1 is available now from http://www.xowave.com.
This release fixes several bugs, including one that caused fade in
and out points to be hidden and un-editable in the fade window. It
also fixes some critical bugs that caused crashes on some systems, so
I strongly recommend you download this free update.

XO Wavers,
I'm very excited to announce the release of 0.19.0. It's really a
dazzling upgrade, not just in appearance but also in features, and
ease of use. In fact, I had to use HTML e-mail for the first time to
get the idea across of just how cool this release is.
Download it now from: http://www.xowave.com/downloads.shtml
Some of the dizzying number of new XO Wave features include:
* Gain Matrix Effect: for tons of gain, for swapping channels or
inverting phase, for MS decoding, for stereo widening, for mono
compatibility checking.... It's the swiss army knife of gain!
* Envelope Generator Effect: for ducking, auto-wah, and other cool
dynamic effects. You can invent your own dynamically controlled
effects using the envelope generator. It's so cool I can't even put
it in words -- you'll just have to play around with it. It's
documented here: http://www.xowave.com/doc/effect/envelope-
generator.shtml
* Support for Sassafras K2 KeyServer: Academics go Woo-Hoo!
* Improved main meter: now you can see it big!
* Ripple and Query now work with Memory locations, including CD Track
Markers. Very groovy!
* Improved pause behavior: No Kidding. Stop. It's Great. Stop.
* Improved and unified import options, so no more confusing "import
as playlist" nonsense or funny looking dialogs.
* And a wildly improved look. Positively beautiful, and also way faster!
There are also some site improvements:
I've added two interview/testimonials, one with Pedro Carneiro, a
classical composer and percussionist, and the other is with Randall
Frazier, president of Massive Music America, which is a music
promotions company. Randall is also an engineer, and uses XO for live
recordings.
The docs are easier to navigate, printable, and more extensive.
As always, please let me know what you think!

Hey all,
I've done some bug fixing and have a new prerelease for 0.19.0:

This fixes some serious issues with fades, crashing on startup, and
ripple all, and also has a few minor improvements to layout and so
on. I'm not calling it beta yet, but it's that much closer.

But I also know some of you are itching to get your hands on the new
prerelease, so you can find that prerelease here: http://

transport area and go back to the above URL if it turns red.

XO Wavers,
I am very pleased to announce XO Wave version 0.18.3. This version
has lots of new features including the much requested "ripple editing" and
Query editing modes, as well as some CD burning enhancements and LOTS of
little things. So many little things that I might well have called this XO
Wave version 0.19. But I didn't.
One more little thing: XO Wave is now Universal. A full change
list follows my signature, so you can read through it if that suits you.
Personally, I recommend downloading it from the new and improved site:

menu options when they were the only window present
-reconnects when certain AU preferences are changed, so manual
reconnection is no longer required.
-some changes to improve expansion/disclosure arrow behavior
-fixed trim edit so that it adjust playback bounds when follow playback is
on. ditto with dragging across tracks and from region bin.
-fixed minor bug that may have used input device latency for the output
device under very rare circumstances.
-reviewed and improved keyboard shortcuts for goto end, goto start and
extend selection to start and end. Also modified return, so that it stops
and resets to the current playback bounds when playing, and resets to the
entire session when stopped.
-Menu item called "spacebar resets playback" renamed to "Spacebar Pauses
Playback" to correctly reflect its function.
-Menu for select channel in channel strip changed to selection list.
-fixed some problems with systems that are missing input or output
devices.
-fixed serious problem when deleting tracks and routing channels maps
changed.
-added ability to open sessions even when files are missing (internal use
only)
-XO Wave now saves last exporter used when exporting to "any QuickTime
time" until XO Wave is quit.
-retooled preview so it works more reliably
-command-T was assigned to both import iTunes playlist and Trim down. Now
it is assigned only to trim down, so that it works reliably and is shown
in the menu.
-fixed problems with keyboard control in playback settings window.
-upgraded purchases addresses some common purchaser issues.
-users are warned when creating a mono track.
-Aux send now resembles Volume.
-fixed weird shapes on old stereo aux and old volume sliders.
-fixed bug that created bad overviews when recording mono onto a stereo
track.
-removed broken help option from some effects.
-state of edit and mix windows saved and restored even if they are hidden.
-fixed bug that causes clicking on start playback arrow to jump to the
end.
-added copy from Region Bin. (for paste into tracks or text editor)
-fixed bug that prevented creating multiple cross-fades when the first
region started at the start of the session.
- blinking LED when an offline operation is going or has just been
started.
- fixed bug that caused crash when resizing tracks in the cross-fade
window.
- added keyboard shortcuts and time menu items for setting current
playback start and stop points.
- fixed bug with renaming region found in search tree. needs testing.
- addressed two drawing glitches: 1. previously, regions were sometimes
not draw when zoomed way out. 2. weird/inaccurate waveform drawing when
nudging regions.
- session overview no longer views more than 10% past the session end.
- alt/option + move replicates to target instead of moving. Works with
ripple and query.
- XO Wave Free produces CD TEXT that says "Created with XO Wave Free"
- added high quality CD Burn verification that is not based on
checksumming or the possibility of missing zeros.
- Pop-up window reminds users every 5 days when a new release is available
and makes it easy to download an update.

I'm not 100% sure I understand your question, but it sounds like you
really have two issues, creating a selection to delete and "rippling" it
while you delete. In the current version, there are lots of ways to create
a selection, including the bracket keys, which work nicely with the memory
locations, especially if you've assigned keyboard shortcuts to them. You
can also Shift-select to modify a selection, and so on. You can also store
and recall selections as memory locations.
Once you have a selection, 0.18.2 won't automatically "shuffle" or ripple
for you, you'll have to manually select to the end (with shift-slash) and
move things to cover up what you want to delete or create blank space.
In 0.18.3, you'll just have to make sure ripple editing is on.
Hope That Helps,

Wow. Thanks so much for the quick reply. That's very encouraging to
know that you're working on that particular feature. Actually,
ProTools calls it "Shuffle" mode. What XO does is what ProTools calls
"Slip" mode.
I'm still not understanding the marker thing. I was hoping to just
listen to the sound, find my edit point, type a key to place an "in"
marker, find my other edit point, type a key to place an "out" market,
double click between the marks and have the pieces snap together. In
theory, it seems easy, but I'm an operator, not a programmer.
Thanks again for all your work.

This has been written and is currently being tested for the next release,
due out very soon. I believe ProTools calls this "Slip" editing. XO Wave
will call it ripple editing, but it's the same idea.

You could jump to the first marker and type '[' to set the selection
start, then jump to the second marker and type ']' to set the selection
end. You can assign keyboard shortcuts to the markers in the memory
locations manager window, which makes that easier.

XO Wave
Audio Production and Post-Production Software for Mac OS X
http://www.xowave.com
I sent this in the Feedback section, but then saw the comment about
using this mailing list, so I'll repeat it here for others to benefit.
------
I was so excited when I saw this program as I had been using ProTools
Free which is not available for Mac OS X. Yet that joy turned to
disappointment when it appeared that the most important thing I will
ask of this, doesn't seem to be doable. Specifically,
When I want to cut out a piece of audio, the "cut" function should
delete the highlighted piece and automatically join the remaining
pieces, just as a word processor would do with text. What XO does is
simply delete the sound and keep the space, which would be more like a
"clear" or "erase" function. Then I have to manually slide the pieces
together. This is great if I want to overlap a piece of music, but is
inaccurate and wastes valuable time for simple editing.
Also, is there a way to place markers and then highlight and delete
the area between markers or do I have to click and drag over the wave
to edit?
I realize this is beta and I commend you for what you've accomplished
thus far. I only hope that these options are there and I'm just not
seeing them.
Thanks.
XO Wavers,
I don't usually e-mail about individual bugs, but 0.18.2 has
become pretty stable, so you may have more confidence when working with
it. A bug that came to my attention recently, however, could stop you in
your tracks, so I want you to know about it.
It won't affect most of you, but if have a mono, non-source tracks
(ie a mono aux send or sub-mix) in your session, it's possible for your
session to become corrupt when you delete that track. Most folks don't use
mono auxiliary sends or sub-mixes, so this should only affect a few
people, but if are one of those folks, be aware that if the Audio Engine
starts complaining about parameter mismatches or won't open on a particular
session, you've probably been victim of this bug.
The good news is: 1. there will be a fix in 0.18.3, and 2. XO Wave
support will fix any corrupt session files you send in very short order.
Just send an e-mail with your .xo file attached to support@..., and
say what happens when you try to open the file. We appreciate any info you
can give about how it happened, as it may provide information about
something we missed.
Good luck to everyone!

XO Wavers:
XO Wave version 0.18.2 (Beta) is now available from
www.xowave.com. The biggest changes involve some rewrites to the Audio
Unit code, so XO Wave should work with more audio units and be more stable
even in the presence of poorly behaved audio units. In addition,
there are some major improvements to CD Text and CD sub-code data. A
full change-list is below.
Please let us know how it goes!

Since the demise of this customer, I personally have watched with keen interest
to see the next of kin but all has proved abortive as no one has come to claim
his funds of US$18.5M (Eighteen Million Five Hundred Thousand United States
Dollars) which has been with our branch for a very long time. On this note, I
decided to seek
for whom his name shall be used as the “Next of Kin” as no one has come up as
his next of kin. And the banking ethics here does not allow such money to stay
more than eight years, because the money will be recalled to the Bank Treasury
as “Unclaimed Fund” after this period.
In view of this I got your contact through a Trade Journal when I was making a
research on a foreigner I will use in this great opportunity. For your
assistant, I am willing to give you 25% of the total amount. Upon the receipt of
your response, I will send you by fax or e-mail the letter of application which
you will Fill, Sign
and send back to our bank to enable us start this processing of this claim. I
will not fail to bring to your notice that this business is Hitch-Free and that
you should not entertain any fear as all modalities for the smooth and easy
transfer of this fund has been finalized, this transaction will be completed
within Five (5) banking
days of receiving your response, after you apply to the bank as a “Relation” to
the deceased.
When you receive this letter, kindly send me a Fax through my personal/direct

signifying your decision.
Please include your Private Tel/Fax Numbers for quick communication regarding
this great opportunity that will definitely benefit both of us.

It's not ideal, but perhaps setting the default input to your interface in
the System Preferences, would save some trouble. IIRC 0.17.5b has support
for seperate input and output devices.
When 0.18.0b comes out, I'll try to have a better solution for you.
Thanks for your feedback!

Bjorn,
Thanks for all the quick replies.
I'm using a little firewire interface for my audio interface. I actually
don't care where my outputs go as much as I care where my inputs come from
(but yes, in general I do like to send my system sounds through the built
in, and DAW sounds through the firewire interface)...
As far as inputs go, everytime I hit record, it defaults to my laptop's mic
unless I switch my audio hardware preferences... Ideally I'd like see Audio
Hardware as a global seting, not a session wide setting... Is that possible?

Adam,
Thanks for your question. When creating a new session, XO Wave
builds that hardware settings based on your default sound device and a set
of default latency settings that have been widely tested as "safe". You
can modify those settings, but, as you've discovered, those settings are
session-specific. If you want to use other hardware as the default, right
now, you must select it in your sound control panel. Latency, simillarly,
must be changed each time you create a session if you are unhappy ith the
conservative default.
If you are creating lots of sessions and always want to use,
say, the built-in hardware for your system sounds and, say, a pro
interface for your pro-audio work, I can definately see where it might
be frustrating to adjust this every time. I am happy to consider adding a
feature for this -- and now is the time since 0.18.0 is planned to be the
last major revision before 1.0. If you could describe your situation a bit
more or if anyone else has a related complaint, please let me know and
I'll see what I can do.

Thanks for your comments. unfortunately, ducking is not really possible
with the current version, though we plan to implement it in the future. In
general, I recomend volume automation as an alternative.
For what it's worth, you could get ducking by some complex track routing
trickery, but I'm not sure it's worth it, since it requires understanding
the routing so that you can appropriately set levels.
If it is worth it, here's how:
- create a stereo speech track. (track 1)
- create a stereo audio track. pan it to the right. (track 2)
- create a mix track. (track 3)
- assign the output from track 2 to track 3.
- assign the routing of track 3 to output only it's right track to the
main output.
- add an aux send to track 1. set it to go to the left channel of track 3.
That should do it, though obviously a real ducking feature would be
better.
