You use the B (for Bulb) setting for that. Basically,
you can depress and hold the cable release for as long
as you want. Many cable releases have a locking button
for really long exposures.

BTW, what model do you have?

There you go... As for a closeup lens, I tried this: B30 (I think) to 52mm screw-in adapter + 52-58mm step up ring + Canon 500D close-up lens: I tried this cuz...
