Has anyeone tried just building a 1.5 swf that contains all of your
mapping components, since it will work natively with the yahoo maps
components in 1.5, and then just loading that 1.5 swf inside of a
loader in your parent 2.0 app? You could still have most of your custom
controls live in the parent app and have them call functions on the 1.5
swf.

Has anyone given this a shot? It seems much cleaner then the
current "work-around".

Karl,

Funny you should bring it up. As hopefull as I was, I tried unsuccessful to do exactly what you suggested. But due to communication issues between the avm1 and avm2 in the player, I was not able to do more than get a map. Yes it did what it was supposed to, but no interaction was really available. I guess, In a sense what you propose, could avctually work, but I don't see the point. If you built the map with everything you want, just to wrap it up in as3, you end up killing a huge percent (I'd guess upwards of the 90's or so) of the performance you would be looking to get out of as3 and player 9. But, yes It could work. Give it a shot and let us know how it goes for you!

I created a yahoo maps app in AS2 and then called the functions in a Flex2 proj and it
seemed to work fine, panning zooming , changing map views, havent really tried anything more fancy
than that , but it sure is possible.

cheers :)

Finished this up today. There are obviously a ton of reasons to want
to develop an overall application in flex 2 vs. flex 1.5, and since
one piece of that application is mapping integration, I wanted to
still take advantage of the great flex api available from Yahoo! as
well as develop the overall app in flex 2. So I did exactly as
discussed below.

I created 1.5 app that contains the swc as well as the basic
container that holds the map component and a few functions exposed
that allow the parent swf to call and do things like add markers,
etc. I compiled this app into swf using the 1.5 compiler and then
loaded it into a swfloader in my parent flex 2.0 app. Then used a
localConnection to allow the parent swf to call functions on the
mapping swf.

So far so good! At least this solutions keeps it all in a flex dev
environment instead of having to use the flash ide and create a fla
movie for the map piece.

I have a standalone Flash application. I have a button that calls a
function that opens a yahoo map in a new window. Though I pass the
correct lat/lon coords to the map, it always loads the default view
first. If I close the window, press my button again, then it correctly
loads the map and displays the correct coords. Why is this happening
and how can I fix it? :*(

Hi,

I have two questions on using CustomSWFMarkers. First, I can't seem
to get click events to fire for widgets in the custom swf, such as on
mousedowns, press, click, etc. It seems there's a clip over the map
that's not allowing these events to make it to the marker swf. Is
there any way to do this; e.g. I'd like to have radio buttons on the
marker that do various things, but I'm not getting the click events. I
can get a onPress event to work for the whole marker, but not for
specific widgets in the marker.

Second, the api indicates that there is a specific interface that
allows for tighter interaction between the map application and the
custom marker. Right now, all I'm doing is grabbing the mcContainer
attribute from the marker that the onCustomMarkerLoader event returns
to me to support interaction between the marker swf and my app. Is
there more that I'm missing?

Thanks!

Are any of you using flash or to impliment the work you're doing you

I am curious if I have the right idea about what your doing as well.
It appears your embedding Yahoo Maps into a FLEX project, is this
correct?

hey acknight,
                     ok it seems like your setting the lat and long for the object before it is initialized which is why when you press the button for the second time it works. Trying using some kind of event handling function , for example like a onLoad or onComplete event and then in that function set the lat and long.
That soudl take care of the prob

yup the reason people want to use flex 2 is because of its strong framework and lots of cool components but essentially you can use just flash to create yahoo maps. If you take a look at the
osfash.org you can see you can write YahooMap apps without using the flash/flex ide

You need to listen for the maps 'initialize' event before you make any
calls to it, otherwise they'll be ignored because the actual map
hasn't been created before this point.

Use this:

map.addEventListener(com.yahoo.maps.flash.api.YahooMap.EVENT_INITIALIZE,
onMapInit);

function onMapInit(eventObject) {
  trace('map is ready!');
}

Adding event listeners for the map is the same as adding listeners to
events in flash, using addEventListener.

ie:

map.addEventListener(com.yahoo.maps.api.flash.YahooMap.EVENT_INITIALIZE,
onMapInit);
map.addEventListener(com.yahoo.maps.api.flash.YahooMap.EVENT_MAP_GEOCODE_SUCCESS\
,
onMapGeocodeSuccess);
map.addEventListener(com.yahoo.maps.api.flash.YahooMap.EVENT_ZOOM,
onZoom);

function onMapInit(eventObject) {
  trace(e.type);
}
function onMapGeocodeSuccess(eventObject) {
  trace(e.type);
}
function onZoom(eventObject) {
  trace(e.type);
}

I would suggest that you create these mouse events in the swf itself,
rather than on the map, if i understand you correctly.

Can you post some code?

Second, theres the callCustomMethod function in CustomSWFMarker, but
the way you are doing it with mcContainer works the same, if not
better actually.

reversed, for example using the default map setting (centred on the US)...

The following AS places a marker in the top left of Kansas.

import com.yahoo.maps.LatLon;

myMap.addEventListener(com.yahoo.maps.api.flash.YahooMap.EVENT_INITIALIZE,
onInitMap);
function onInitMap(eventData) {

var myLatLon:LatLon = myMap.getCenter()
addMarkerFunction(myLatLon)
trace(myLatLon) // Outputs: point(-99.84814453125, 39.2322532465513)

}

var addMarkerFunction = function (myLatLon:Object) {
  var myMarker = {index:'index', title:'title', description:'desc',
markerColor:0xFF0000, strokeColor:0xFFFF00};
  myMap.addMarkerByLatLon(CustomPOIMarker, myLatLon, myMarker);
};

but if you apply the LatLon cords from above with the class, for
example...

var myLatLon:LatLon = new LatLon(-99.84814453125, 39.2322532465513);
addMarkerFunction(myLatLon)
trace(myLatLon) // Outputs: point(39.2322532465513, -99.84814453125)

So the LatLon cords are reversed. Am I using the new LatLon() method
incorrectly or is this a bug?

Thanks for your help,

Thanks.

It looks like my problem is that I'm trapping rollover and rollout
events in the custom swf root timeline to emulate the behavior in the
POIMarker (expanding when mousing over and contracting when mousing
out):

this.onRollOver = function(evt) {
	 this.gotoAndStop("open");
}
this.onRollOut = function(evt) {
	 this.gotoAndStop("closed");
}

This isn't letting click events get through for any UI components in
the custom swf. The problem has nothing to do with your
CustomSWFMarker, so sorry to bug you about it here. However, if you
know how to get around this, I'd appreciate it, since I'd guess this
is pretty common behavior.

You'd use setSize(width, height) or change its height physically in
the IDE.

How do you use the Maps constructor function?
http://developer.yahoo.com/maps/flash/V3.04/flashReference.html#Map

I would like to set the maps default location with actionScript and
not in the Components Parameters Inspector.

It is possible to use myMap.setCenterByAddress() to move the map but
requires the default map to load then your new address has to load.

Make sure you have the component in your library and try:
_m_args =
{_x:0,_y:0,_xscale:2500,_yscale:1500,appidStr:"ENTER_KEY_HERE",zoomLevelStr:11,a\
ddressStr:"1950
University Avenue, Berkeley, Ca 94703"};
_map = attachMovie('com.yahoo.maps.api.flash.YahooMap', '_map', 1,
_m_args);

From the example code, YahooSearch.fla works fine from within flash
professional 8. If I put the resulting YahooSearch.swf movie inside a
webpage and access it through a web server, it returns nothing (I
changed the trace statements to output to a textarea instead).

Is this a cross-domain security issue? I assumed somehow that Yahoo
Flash API was doing something similar to JSON.

Would moving to AS3 make any difference?

I tried on both, IE7 and FF 1.5 with the same negative results.

Any help is greatly appreciated.
Carlos

Okay you officially rock.

How did you figure that out?

We built an application but it isnt working any more.
We use crossdomain and flash by Flashhttprequest described
here:
http://www.xml.com/pub/a/2006/06/28/flashxmlhttprequest-proxy-to-the-
rescue.html
and
http://blog.monstuff.com/archives/000294.html
But the http://api.search.yahoo.com/crossdomain.xml was removed!!!
Did Yahoo block this type of access ?

Its strange because in the faq:

Q: Does Yahoo! support Macromedia® Flash development using the Yahoo!
Search APIs?

To help you use Yahoo! Search APIs in your Flash applications, we
have added a crossdomain.xml file to the top level of the Search Web
Services directory. This should enable your Flash-based applications
to retrieve data from the Web Services.

So, if they say is possible what happens? Maybe, they removed the
access and forgot to change the FAQS...

Hi Marcel,

Yahoo! has moved many of the API entrypoints to *.yahooapis.com, to
consolidate our API access and mitigate potential security issues.
The new entry point for the search API is search.yahooapis.com, as
described in the documentation: http://developer.yahoo.com/search/web/
V1/webSearch.html. Search.yahooapis.com is completely Flash-friendly.

Best,

Allen

Hi Carlos,

It appears that this is a crossdomain.xml issue, due to the incorrect
URL for the search API entrypoint. Make sure that your application is
using search.yahooapis.com, NOT api.search.yahoo.com to access the
API. More details on the request URL are available in the docs here:
http://developer.yahoo.com/search/web/V1/webSearch.html

Best,

Allen

Carlos,

The problem is that there is no crossdomain file on api.search.yahoo.com
(http://api.search.yahoo.com/crossdomain.xml), despite the fact that the
web service still does in fact respond
(http://api.search.yahoo.com/WebSearchService/V1/webSearch?appid=YahooDemo&query\
=madonna&results=2).
This would explain why it works in the IDE and not on a live site. I
have a new version of the YahooAPI class that resolves all of these
issues for both AS2 and AS3, and I can send you a copy of that this
evening. I will post it to this list when i do so.
