May I ask where you store your files? if you store them into the site, I wish to
know how since I'm still sort of new to web design.

Tomas:

Although is it possible
to upload files through your WebHost's
control panel, a much easier solution is
to use a FTP program.

The last Free scholastic version from
IPSwitch is about 10 years old, but it is
the FTP client program I have used for years
and that I still use.

It is in my website folder..
http://www.great-grandma.com/systems/ws_ftple6/

The following link is to a *.zip file
that contains all of the items
within that website folder that are discussed below
(except for the *.zip file itself, of course).

http://www.great-grandma.com/systems/ws_ftple6/ws_ftple6-2010.07.03.zip

In addition to the program, that website folder
also contains my instructions
for various things to do after installation
that I wrote for my son.

The website folder also contains an additional folder
which has three *.wav files I modified from the
program's originals that are more quiet
than the original default sounds for this program
since the default sounds are so loud that
they actually startled me on many occasions.

The newer *.wav files are named the same as the originals
and are designed to replace the original *.wav files
in the c:/Program Files/WS_FTP on my XP computer
after the program installation.

(See instructional *.txt file
readme-after_install-ws_ftple6-2010.07.03.txt)

References to "BlueHost" are references to my
webhost provider, and will likely vary
in the case of your webhost.

I intend all the very best.

Would this media player work in an HTML email? I know that javascript isn't

Well, yes and no.

The player Javascript will never travel in an email. But exposing the
MP3 links for the player to grab onto will also expose them to the
recipient to click on.

Hi I wonder is it possible to obtain play counts of particular tracks using the

If you want to count a listen all the way to the end as a play, use
the onTrackComplete event. You could use onProgress to detect
listening to at least 30 seconds. Or onTrackStart if playing even 1
second qualifies.

Right, Lucas. You could use those API calls to detect the occurrence of a
track play. It's up to you (the web site author) to keep track of the
counts, however you see fit.

Mike, the thing I don't get is how to use the YUI event API. Does
this code make sense?

     var apiReadyHandler = function ()
     {
         /* Once API ready handler is invoked, YAHOO.MediaPlayer class
can be accessed safely */
         /* For example: Add other event listeners **/
         YAHOO.MediaPlayer.onTrackStart.subscribe(onPlaylistUpateHandler)
     }

     var onPlaylistUpdateHandler = function (mediaObject)
     {
         /* Handler for onPlaylistUpdate event */
         alert(" playlist count = " + YAHOO.MediaPlayer.getPlaylistCount())
     }

     YAHOO.MediaPlayer.onAPIReady.subscribe(apiReadyHandler);

That code should work, although this particular example code may not be
terribly useful. The getPlaylistCount() method returns the number of
tracks in the playlist, which will be the same every time you call it,
unless your page has JavaScript that adds tracks to the playlist
dynamically.

Hi guys. Thanks for the great media player. It works great and the API is
super simple to use. I notice that there isn't any way to directly manipulate
the playlist. You can add to it using addTracks() or play() and when calling
play() you can clear the entire list before it adds your track.

I assume there's some way internally to manipulate the actual playlist? Any one
able to point me in the right direction to be able to do this?

Thanks,

Gabriel

Can you clarify the question? Are you hacking the code and looking
for internal hooks to modify the playlist aside from the public API?

Yep, that's exactly what I'm trying to do. I'm already taking advantage of
YAHOO.MediaPlayer.controller.playlistmanager.playListArray elsewhere.

I'd like to be able to directly manage the playlist, add, delete, and rearrange
tracks. I have a workaround for doing this but I was wondering if there were
some internal methods for manipulating the playlist since the public API only
exposes addTracks() and clear()?

Hope that makes sense.

You could use addTracks and clear() to add, delete, and rearrange.
FWIW. Probably less trouble than internal APIs. But maybe not.

You try Firebug?

Heh, yeah, that's what I'm doing already. Basically managing a div with a list
of tracks and anytime I make an update to it I call addTracks() again in order
to sync up the mediaplayer playlist.

I've tried watching it with Firebug if that's what you mean but no dice so far.
Wondered if I was missing something or if someone could confirm that there's no
way to do what I want.

I wish Yahoo! would just opensource the code.

Hi there,

When playing a song in the YMP the title of the song is a link back to yahoo
search.

Does anyone know how to remove or customise this link?
My preference would be to have it link back to my site - or to nothing.

Thanks in advance,
/Alister

The goal there is to give some traffic back to Yahoo in exchange for
providing the software. At the same time that link should be adding
value for the user.

Seems reasonable enough... Not a heavy handed demand, anyhow.

No doubt you can hide or remove it. But probably not worth the trouble.

Unfortunately the request to remove the link is from a client.

Its a choice of either removing those links or using a different player.

Here's what you do.

Start the player.
Open Firebug.
Use Firebug to find the CSS selector for the link.
Do selector { visibility: hidden } or some such.

Subject: Media Player no longer working on my web page
newbrunswick...

I am the "webmaster" at the New Brunswick Free Public Library. I created a page
about a year ago that uses the Yahoo Media Player to provide audio clips:
http://nbfpl.org/story.html. It was recently pointed out to me that the audio no
longer works, and I cannot figure out why. It worked before, and nothing has
changed with the webpage on our end. Is there something wrong with the Yahoo
Media Player, or does it no longer work for WAV files, or what? Can you help me
with this? If I cannot figure out how to get it to work for the Yahoo player, I
guess I'm just going to have to find another player or something. Any help
would be appreciated!
Thanks,
Joye

Can you tell us which browsers are not working? And on which platforms?
For example, are you seeing the problem on Windows XP using Internet
Explorer 8.0, or on Macintosh using Safari 4.0? Please list all
combinations where you are observing a problem. And if it DOES work on
some platforms, please list those as well. This info will be very useful
in helping to track down the cause of the problem.

Thanks,
-Mike D.

I can reproduce this on OS X, Firefox, QuickTime Plug-in 7.6.6. The
player marks his wav links with play buttons on initial draw/parse,
but the play buttons disappear after about five seconds.

Joye, YMP is architected to support multiple media rendering engines,
and to match a media type in a web page to an engine that can render
it. If it doesn't support a media type it means that there is no
rendering engine. On my system this would be Quicktime. If YMP
doesn't find a rendering engine for WAV, it means that QT support is
broken or has been removed. My guess is that the underlying YMP
player hasn't been touched. It's more likely that the QT APIs which
YMP relies on have changed.

I suspect but don't know for sure that rendering engines can be
plugged in by third party Javascript libraries, which would mean that
this problem can be fixed by third party developers.

If there is no available playback engine, or the engine is not initialized
successfully, YMP should show an error message informing the user of the
problem. So one way or another, this looks like a legitimate bug. I
forwarded it on to the appropriate channels at Yahoo!. Hopefully, they
will have a chance to check it out and find a fix before too long.

It is not working on either Firefox or on IE on more than one computer, at least
one of which is running Windows XP. I haven't been able to try anything else,
and am really not interested in doing so because this needs to work on these
browsers on this platform for our patrons to use it. But thank you for any help
with this that you can think of!

The simplest workaround is to switch to MP3. I know that's a
intrusive solution, but you could rely on it working, and it wouldn't
be a lot of trouble.

Hi Joye,

We (Yahoo!) will try and figure out what's going on. I myself can play the
audio just fine on IE, FF and Chrome with Windows XP, so there's definitely
something going wrong with a particular configuration. Apologies for the
inconvenience.

Yeah, I'm going to look into switching to MP3. That seems the best bet.
Thanks!!

Thank you so much for this insight! It seems my best bet is to switch the WAV
files to MP3, since that type is obviously better supported. Thanks!

What's the bug?

What makes you think it's a FF 4 b6 issue?
