Second question first: you log in as root by giving
the username "root" at the login: prompt, and then the
root password. Whoever set your PC up will tell you
this. Or you can use a rescue disk to change the root
password. Alternatively, from an xterm just type "su"
and then supply the root password when asked.

However, 5.04 sounds like an ancient version of
RedHat; so you probably want to upgrade that first.
Unless it's the latest Linspire. Linspire is based on
Debian, which can use .deb packages; but it normally
includes something called "Gaim", which is a superior
replacement for Yahoo Messenger -- just use that instead.

5.04 sounds like Ubuntu 5.04 (hoary hedgehog). Which is a Debian based distro. Which means it's not a rpm based distro. Which means it uses .deb packages....

It's probably Ubuntu. Since yahoo messenger is so outdated, and doesn't support voice or video, I would suggest Gaim, which is already installed with Ubuntu. ...

I believe that 5.04 refers to Ubuntu 5.04. In which case, you won't be able to install the .rpms at all. In fact, you're best off sticking to GAIM :P, however:...
