Is there any way with BOSS API to prevent copyrighted images from appearing in
search results?

I've tried simple stuff like adding '-copyright' or '-"rights reserved"' to
queries, but these phrases don't appear to be indexed even when they appear on
referring page. For example,

http://www.flickr.com/photos/urloth/2195542225/

contains the phrase "All rights reserved", but images from this page still
return for the query:

http://boss.yahooapis.com/ysearch/images/v1/Gensler+-rights+-reserved?format=xml\
&dimensions=medium,large,wallpaper,widewallpaper&appid=<omitted>&count=20

Is there some other effective way to omit copyrighted images from results?

Ads are not available in the BOSS xml at this time. You can apply for a YSM account and use the javascript based ads. That is what I do at http://insiderfood.com

I used to wonder why it was so difficult to include ads until someone pointed out the super flexibility of BOSS. How can they sell ads to advertisers when they have no idea what your page is going to look like, how you rerank information, or add additional sources. It's much easier with the Google API where you are limited to how your page will look.

So it is taking longer to get this sorted out.  I would love to ditch the js version for the xml version but its not there yet.

Hi,

I see there are earlier threads about including a date range or "latest so many
days" type of web search. Is there any update on whether these are going to be
added, and if so, roughly when ?

I am looking to start a service that can only work if this is implemented. For
the search terms I am looking at, without some sort of date filtering, I would
be getting possibly more than a million results, so re-ordering received results
by date is just not feasible.

Many thanks,

Hello Adam.

I tried to reproduce your issue, but was not able to.

Yes, it is correct that the BOSS API web queries are using the same Yahoo! search engine as http://search.yahoo.com/ does.

---------------

Details on my experience:

[1]
If I go to http://search.yahoo.com/ and enter:

       intitle:"christmas gift"

...and click the "Search" button, I then see:

       "1 - 10 of 839,000"

[2]
If I then perform the BOSS equivalent query, my XML response back includes the following:

       <resultset_web count="10" start="0" totalhits="29297" deephits="839000">

Notice this BOSS "deephits" number above matches the same number as the http://search.yahoo.com/ output above.

[3]
I am assuming you were looking at the "totalhits" number in your BOSS XML response, instead of the "deephits" number, is likely the issue.

The "deephits" number is what you should notice as being fairly close (or the same) to what the Y! Search results page also reports back, for the equivalent query.

[4]
When I compare the actual (first) Top 10 results between the Y! Search query above, and the BOSS equivalent query, I see basically the same Top 10 results (same page titles and same links).

---------------

Please kindly provide a specific step-by-step test case, with as much detail as possible (including your actual BOSS query), if this is still an issue for you.  But hopefully the above detail answers your question.

Thanks,
Jay

Hello Ciaran.

This ability was added to the past BOSS v1.4 release (4/9/09) with the new feature called "strictlang".

So if we take your below example of:

     http://sg.search.yahoo.com/search?p=singapore&rd=r2

....and convert it to the BOSS equivalent query (using "strictlang=1"), it would be:

     http://boss.yahooapis.com/ysearch/web/v1/singapore?appid={INSERT YOUR APP ID HERE}&format=xml&lang=en&region=sg&strictlang=1

Hi Ryan,

The BOSS V2 product which will include the new fee structure will be released later this Summer. After the launch there will be a transition time for V1 users before V1 is rate limited. This time will be 60-90 days post launch. After this time V1 will continue to function.

For ads, BOSS TOS supports any ad solution (from Yahoo or outside). Also, through BOSS custom we look at different implementations and depending on many factors (current and estimated traffic levels, technology, etc) a custom ad implementation can be setup (e.g. Hakia).  We’re also actively looking at other ad solutions and we should have more detail on this later this year.

Thanks,

Ashim

Hi All,

My colleagues and I are seriously considering starting a new business encompassing some of our current technology with Yahoo BOSS. I was wondering if anyone would be able to answer the following questions for me as past of that consideration:

  1. When is the new fee structure going to be introduced? We currently see this fee structure as a positive as long as it is accompanied with a service level agreement covering latency and guaranteed uptime.
  2. We are quite puzzled about hot to go about monetizing a search product which uses Yahoo BOSS. There doesn't appear to be anyway to incorporate Yahoo's apt into such a product nor Google's Adsense. What advertising services are available to publishers who need search based ads? We are after something similar to the "Sponsored Links" that appear with search results from http://hakia.com

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

This is actually a documentation issue, and not a technical issue.

You are correct that for web queries, you use an uppercase "OR" between the query terms, such as:

    http://boss.yahooapis.com/ysearch/web/v1/car OR cars?appid={insert your APP ID here}&format=xml

But to accomplish this same boolean query for news queries, you instead space-delimit the terms within parenthesis, such as:

    http://boss.yahooapis.com/ysearch/news/v1/(car cars)?appid={insert your APP ID here}&format=xml

----------

So I will now file an internal bug report (assigned to our BOSS documentation team), regarding getting the external BOSS documentation to reflect the above.

Thank you Eric for surfacing this, and hope the above helps.
Jay

Boolean seems to work fine for web queries. Am I doing something wrong, or is this a known issue?

They should be very close (sounds like data consistency issues)
Working on it

The results of BOSS api and the Yahoo! web search service are different for first 100 results (at least, as i'm currently using only first 100 results) for the same query.
Tried for the query "bank".
What are the reasons?

Hi,

Yes you can, have you tried the “sites” parameter.

Cheers

If you search on some of the Boss search engine like Hakia etc. this, see 4th
and 5th listings have wrong titles like 1862 or 4363.

Try wrapping each query part in quotes

"apple pie" "convection oven"

And see if that gets you what you want
Relevant/popular queries heavily influence the creation of keyterms btw

i want to find the intersection of the 2 queries "apple pie" and "convection oven", not 2 separate queries. in other words, i want to be able to get all the pages that are relevant to both "apple pie" *and* "convection oven."  is it possible to stitch these into one search string?  alternatively, can i do one search then refine it?

thanks again,
dino
