Hello,
Exciting news of BOSS tonight.
I wanted to know if the freshness of the index is the same as in the
regular Yahoo! SE? Part of my challenge is that I need (near) real
time results as data changes often in my application.
Thanks.
A big big thank you to all the pre-launch participants. BOSS is
officially up and off the ground.

Thanks everyone for their participation and push over the last couple of days. Really impressive stuff – I can’t wait to see what you build when we expose more!

Hey,
My idea (Which is already live using my own indexing technologies)
requires only results for a select number of domains, would it be
possible to input say 200 domains and search against them to get a
dataset?
Thanks

I am a bit confused with how to get a BOSS ID.
It seems that in the registration page
http://developer.yahoo.com/wsregapp/
the BOSS ID option is only available if I choose
Browser Based Authentication
But in order to do so, I have to give a
BBAuth Success URL
Then, at the site suggested by the BBAuth Success URL, I have to put
the little piece of code that will allow Yahoo to make sure that I
have control of that site.
Here is the problem:
I do not really have a public site. I have a private site (password
protected) and at this point I want to experiment with the APIs.
Any suggestions on what I need to do?
Thank you
I feel you. Lots of reasons why we chose BBAuth but we're going to do our best to make it easier to sign up.
I would recommend using a free host (weebly, googlepages, etc.). It doesn't matter if you run the api from that provided endpoint - just do it to get that appid ;)
Hope this helps.

Hello,
I get the following message during site registration process:
Result: Pass (checked http://www.xxxxxxxxx.xxx/ydn5jL63Q.html ). You
can remove this file now.
Than I click at "Continue" and the result is the following:
Result: unchecked
This happens again and again... what should I do?
I'm using FF 3.0

Suppose I have a web site that has a link on a page "Paris Hilton" and
that links takes me to another page that has my own content about her
as well as a list of news results from the news search query.
Is that legal under the Terms of Service?
I am planning to launch an Innovative Search Engine Powered by Yahoo's BOSS. I am looking for partner Developers/Business Managers. If anyone of you interested then please feel free to contact me. I think it is better to work in a Team rather then SOLO.
About Myself: I am a prominent developer having great experience in Fortune 10 companies with a computer science major in AI/DataMining.

"BOSS gives you access to Yahoo!'s investments in crawling and

Documentation only mentions how to get results from Yahoo (similar to
the API) but does not talk about crawling, indexing, ranking.
I would like to use BOSS to power search on my website. However, Y!
Search is not that good with indexing and ranking pages from my site.
It also has problem with indexing images off my site.
Is there a way to use BOSS to crawl and build an index of my site and
then use it with custom ranking to power search results on my site?
Thx.

Hi all, thanks for BOSS. :)
I have a question. I'm looking to develop a web app that incorporates
LOCAL search results of businesses, like http://ca.local.yahoo.com/
example: search for "tires" with postal code "b4a 1e6".
I am experimenting with vineet_boss.py on my system and of course
getting regular web search results.
Would this need a newly implemented search_type (local?) or is there
some way of getting local search results with the existing API?
Thanks a lot,
-Rob
I'm writing because I'm trying to figure out if I can legally use BOSS
with my startup Watchlister - http://www.watchlister.com. It's
basically a web based RSS aggregator (like Bloglines or Newsgator
Online) but just for searches, so that people can figure out when
people talk about them or their brand online.
My concern is that since we would be polling hourly for this data,
that we'd be lumped in with malicious bots or spiders, etc.
Thanks,
Mike Buckbee
I think yahoo is only providing API for accessing its search results with UN Limited queries. The crawling, Indexing is not being exposed by them. We all know yahoo is not very good in crawling/indexing/ranking. So the only thing they are trying to do is to provide developers an opportunity to improve presentation layer and grab the developer's local market. Thus they can earn more revenues.
Thx AB

I'm struggling to interpret this portion of the TOS
(a) You shall not refer to the Services, or use or display any Yahoo!
trademarks, service marks, logos or other Yahoo!-related branding in
connection with any Links or Web Search Results or in any other
manner, except where expressly and specifically authorized by Yahoo!
in writing.
Depending on the interpretation, it sure sounds like I'd be in
violation of the TOS if I wrote a blog post stating that my service
was now incorporating Yahoo BOSS search results. Is that the case?
Thanks,
Mike
I have much experience developing with the Yahoo search API. I can
help you get a quick start to using Yahoo BOSS for your project.
Serious inquiries only and renumeration expected.
@AB
According to Y! "BOSS gives you access to Yahoo!'s investments in
crawling and indexing, ranking and relevancy algorithms, and powerful
infrastructure".
I agree that this can be interpreted in two different ways. It'd be
great if Y! team member can clarify if they will let developers (even
if it is in future) use slurp or create custom indexes on Y!'s
infrastructure.

Not in this version. Stay tuned on that.
Also, check out Boss custom and email us there. We’re working with select partners on exactly those type of technology solutions.

So this means yahoo is looking to refine for Presentation layer NOT the actual core. Correct me if I am wrong but the same functionality can be achieved via GOOGLE's API with better results.??

Hi Anshu – Boss aims to advance it all (relevancy, freshness, presentation, comprehensiveness). Be patient, it’s an incremental platform – more to come. The first version for now exposes a REST search API with minimal restrictions on its usage - which is different from other API offerings (including our previous YDN solution). You can for ex. fetch a 1000 search results (in steps), rank them with your own algorithm, or blend in your favorite external content, replace abstracts, mine them for common terms, build a query expansion database, etc.
Also, take a look at the examples provided in the boss mashup framework.
I have an example where using this API I was able to re-rank news articles in a fresher (totally subjective) way by using wikipedia edits.
Hope this helps.
We really appreciate your feedback.
Thanks,

Thanking you very much for your reply. We all understand this will be more mature over time. I found a nice article about BOSS on http://searchengineland.com/080710-000100.php
Please have a look. This is a good article to grab. Is the example(you talking about) available for view? I mean the code and functionality. I think it would be nice if we can have a small but fully functional example (including sample code) in BOSS Documentation.
Please let me know if it is possible to refer any example.
Thanks AB

Hello, everyone.
I received a appid that ends with a "-".
If i call a news-search (i use "abcde-" as appid), like
http://boss.yahooapis.com/ysearch/news/v1/Sport?format=xml®ion=at&lang=de&app\
id=abcde-&start=10,
i get the links to prev/next like:
/ysearch/news/v1/Sport?format=xml®ion=at&lang=de&appid=abcde&start=0
/ysearch/news/v1/Sport?format=xml®ion=at&lang=de&appid=abcde&start=20
The "-" is missing. If i open these link (on
http://boss.yahooapis.com/), i get a "Access is forbidden to the
requested page". Adding the "-" makes everything work again.
Is this a known bug so far?
Regards, Rainer
So I'm curious whether or not the platform will allow us to really reach in and
play with the
mechanics of search. To give an example, an app I was working on a while back
needed the
ability to weight keywords differently in order to return fine-tuned results.
something like
spears 100
-britney
-asparagus
arrows 30
weapons 60
In order to find material about 'spears' while excluding irrelevant results and
including results
that probably mentioned 'weapons' and may have mentioned 'arrows'.
Possible?
Eric
I'm completely stumped by an error the BOSS api is returning. I've
tried every permutation I can think of, including using example URLs
from the docs (with proper escaping). I get the same error regardless...
400 Error with the message:
The requested URL "/ysearch/web/v1/flowers?appid=my.appid--
&format=xml&start=0&count=10", is invalid.
According to the docs a 400 error is returned if there are unescaped
reserved characters in the URL. However there are clearly none of these
in the URL above.
Is anyone else having this problem?
Thanks!
* I removed some characters from the appid so this URL won’t work but just wanted to show the format of the url
Double check your appid and see if the problem still persists. Also make sure you don’t have two dashes after the appid value.
Thanks

Let me clarify... obviously the app ID in my sample is not my actual

If you use an incorrect app ID you get an error about the app ID, not
about the format of the URL.
Also two dashes (which by the way are part of my real app ID) will
not cause an invalid URL error.
