Hi,
I've been trying to figure out if it's ok to use BOSS for commercial
applications with the standard API they issue.

Thing is - Flickr, for example, have different criteria and access in
case you want to use a commercial application.

Can anyone help?
Do you know what are the limitations if any on the BOSS API usage?
like running ads, what details to display on search results, etc...

I've used "inurl:" option in search query and I've got some results
from other sites not included in this filter.

Please, could you explain how exactly works this option?

Thanks.

Ritesh,

I did a test on buildasearch using your "python ngrams" and it seems to produce
valid
results. http://www.buildasearch.com/earthoid?e=python+ngrams&submit=search

Just a did a query on your search. The 406 error might be a coding issue on your
service.

Diego

You can use the BOSS API for commercial applications and has unlimited query
usage. One of
main restrictions for the API is placing 3rd party ADs on the custom BOSS
application.

Inurl will find those words anywhere in the url so it could return noise (like if megaupload occurs at the end of a url). Probably want to use the sites parameter (check the boss docs)

I didn't see this in the TOS, so wanted to make sure this really is
the case? If I have results displayed on my site can I have google
ads? If not, if I can get in the beta of the yahoo ads service, is
that acceptable? I know a revision of the TOS is coming up, so if I
should just sit tight, I can do that too.

The BOSS web services were updated this morning (between 9:30 and
10:00am Pacific time). This release fixes two issues:

1. ClickURL fields could contain characters breaking the XML; these
are now properly escaped
2. In the "prev/next" links returned, the AppID included now matches
the original AppID provided, so the links will now work properly

If anyone sees any further issues related to XML being incorrect,
please report them here and include example queries.

thanks!

It says:

url vs clickurl
Note There is a requirement to include the clickurl in anchor link of your
search results.

I checked the TOS, and it does not seem to mention we need to use
clickurl.

Also, NOT EVEN 4hoursearch.com is actually using clickurl, but _some_
of the sites created with BOSS are using it.

I have my site sending people through the clickurl url for now, but in the
future, do we need to or not??

There should be some provision for including the 3rd party ads along
with the compulsory Yahoo sponsored ads. Otherwise, it doesn't make
any sense in saying that BOSS is open source and start putting
restrictions on it. Really looking forward to the new and detailed TOS.

These arguments (doc and host 2) does not appear in the documentation.
Please could you explain what are them for?

Because I have 2 problems filtering results per sites (sites arg.):
-I get lot of results from the same site
-I only can filter by groups of 25-30 sites each time

So, please! can I have any hope about these problems/limitations will

Hi Forrest. BOSS doesn't provide the website thumbnails as you are asking about.
Take a
look at our new search engine powered by BOSS that we are releasing today as
part of the
Mashable BOSS Challenge entry.

For the last 2 years we've been developing a scalable platform to capture and
deliver these
thumbnails, powered by the Amazon AWS infrastructure. We are still in private
beta, but
you can signup now... You can see a use case of these thumbnails in our
uQuery.com
website. Soon this will be freely available for developers.

This would be a mashup application. You would have to take the results and then use each result to request a screenshot from a different api. You would then display the screen shot instead of the text results. Then use CSS and Javascript or Flash to make the nifty scroll feature.

I don’t know if this is BOSS powered or not, but here’s the most popular example of this search engine metaphor http://www.searchme.com/

Ted

Are you intending to search fr results in the us market? If no, then try changing the region param.

The region and lang parameters need  to be used in combination. Trying region=fr&lang=fr produces French results.

Thanks,

Ashim

Subject: [ysearchboss] language & region parameter have no effect !?

Hello,

I'm trying to set language selection with the universal BOSS API
arguments "&lang=..", but it seems to have to effects ...!

This is two query about the word "toto", one in english, one in
french, it outputs the same totalhits value!

Query : "toto" in english
--------
http://boss.yahooapis.com/ysearch/web/v1/toto?appid=XXX&lang=en

response: "totalhits":"3711685
-----------
{"ysearchresponse":{"responsecode":"200","nextpage":"\/ysearch\/web\/v1\/toto?appid=BhrIZBLV34GS5DiKaLQnfudV4n9Fd0PWn1l._i9R4GtO.e6BAqFyqxhlNdAWxEZu1baeJ2o-&lang=en&start=10","totalhits":"3711685","deephits":"114000000","count":"10","start":"0","resultset_web"

AND

Query : "toto" in french

response: "totalhits":"3711685. THIS SHOULDN'T BE THE SAME VALUE!

solution is "setting both language & region at the same time"

...

It's still doesn't work :

[my goal, here, is to know if there is more web pages about "toto" in
france than in unites states.]

Q :
http://boss.yahooapis.com/ysearch/web/v1/toto?appid=BhrIZBLV34GS5DiKaLQnfudV4n9F\
d0PWn1l._i9R4GtO.e6BAqFyqxhlNdAWxEZu1baeJ2o-&lang=fr®ion=fr

A :
{"ysearchresponse":{"responsecode":"200","nextpage":"\/ysearch\/web\/v1\/toto?ap\
pid=BhrIZBLV34GS5DiKaLQnfudV4n9Fd0PWn1l._i9R4GtO.e6BAqFyqxhlNdAWxEZu1baeJ2o-&lan\
g=fr®ion=fr&start=10","totalhits":"3685472","deephits":"110000000","count":"1\
0","start":"0","resultset_web"
            --------------------
[...]

{"ysearchresponse":{"responsecode":"200","nextpage":"\/ysearch\/web\/v1\/toto?ap\
pid=BhrIZBLV34GS5DiKaLQnfudV4n9Fd0PWn1l._i9R4GtO.e6BAqFyqxhlNdAWxEZu1baeJ2o-&lan\
g=en®ion=us&start=10","totalhits":"3680028","deephits":"113000000","count":"1\
0","start":"0","resultset_web"
           ---------------------
[...]

totalhits is more or less the same, but it's not possible!! : there
should be far more pages in "us" region than in france...

Take a look at this site -
http://www.thumbshots.org/

They provide thumbnails for any website. The quality of screenshots from the free version isn't that good. The API is below -
http://open.thumbshots.org/image.aspx?url=<url>
http://open.thumbshots.org/image.aspx?url=http://www.yahoo.com/

I wrote a similar mashup a month back -

Thanks,
Praveen.

This would be a mashup application. You would have to take the results and then use each result to request a screenshot from a different api. You would then display the screen shot instead of the text results. Then use CSS and Javascript or Flash to make the nifty scroll feature.

I don¢t know if this is BOSS powered or not, but here¢s the most popular example of this search engine metaphor http://www.searchme .com/

Hi. In a CNET news article on the launch of the BOSS service, there's
a screenshot of a demo showing web page previews. See
http://news. cnet.com/ 8301-1023_ 3-9986424- 93.html . Has anyone seen the
demo? Is the demo a web application or a desktop app? I can't tell
from the picture. Is the demo available online? I want to check out it
myself because I don't see anything in the BOSS API that would return
or generate web page previews for you (unless I missed something in
the documentation) . Thanks.

Ted is correct, as a stand alone API BOSS could not power a visual search results page.  One would have to pull in images from a separate API – like the one Praveen points out.  So, you are not missing anything in the documentation.

In the article you are referring it is not necessarily a screenshot, but rather a mockup that was used to demonstrate what could be possible with BOSS.  Emphasis on “could” since you would need access to images elsewhere.  This was part of  a presentation the Yahoo! BOSS team provided to the media.

Searchme has done an impressive job of indexing images, and has added functionality beyond image previews – like Stacks.

Hope that helps.

I still have the same results ...

Query of "toto" gives more or less the same number of hits
whatever I'm asking for pages in french (and in france) or in english
(and in the US)...

It can't be true !

... any help appreciated.

regard,
  Hubert.
