This is soooo great, Dan! Thank you!

If I have part of an address that I want to appear in the pop-up box
(ie: Old Marion Hwy), I can put it in <description> instead of
<ymaps:Address>.

And for those of you who haven't discovered what you can do with
<description>, click on Rest Stop 1 - http://ms150.info/test/

Dan,

Is it possible to set the order of items in the SmartView list?

I'd like them to appear in the same order as the groups. On my test
page at http://ms150.info/test/ the groups are: Start, RestStops,
Finish, Hospitals. But in the SmartView list they are Start, Finish,
Hospitals, RestStops.

Thanks for everything you do!

Hello Yahoo! folk,

On this page:

Under the section titled:

"What Does Yahoo! Offer?"

The following links are broken (404 errors):

Yahoo! Widgets -
http://developer.yahoo.net/widgets/index.html
Flickr - http://developer.yahoo.net/flickr/index.html
Yahoo! Music Engine -
http://developer.yahoo.net/music/index.html

Note - I found the info I needed from the main API

these.

Thanks,

Subject: Latitude and Longitude queries?
robertoschler
Send Email Send Email

Hello,

A few questions:

1) I want to be able to go from just a city to a
latitude and longitude that I can pass to the maps API
call.

The docs say that if you don't use the latitude and
longitude XML fields, you must specify the Address,
State, Zip, and Country for the location.

How can I go from just a city in the US to a longitude
and latitude?

2) How can I do the same above for cities in Canada?

3) Futures: how long before other locations outside
the US & CA are available, especially the European
Union?

Thanks.

I see that I can use the geocoder from WorldKit. It
has a nice REST interface. Nevermind.

Thanks,

Hello,

My name is James and this is my first post to this list. I have a question:
when I plotted long/lat points from geocoder, they seem to be a bit off from
where they should be. Is there any other free geocoders out there that are more
accurate or am I missing something?

Thank you!

Try removing that space before <?xml…?>.  A valid xml document can’t have spaces before the xml declaration.

Actually, for extralink, its usage is like a normal anchor tag.

Example:  <ymaps:ExtraLink href=”your link here”>any text here</ymaps:ExtraLink>

Thanks Elena.

I have simplified my URL just to make it working, but if your
suggestion works it would help to get more specific information (more
complex URLs).

I will give it a try and let you guys knows what works for me.

It's a great help.

I assume you have more than 100 points to show?  If you don’t, you can just specify the addresses, and Yahoo! will geocode the points on the fly.  If that solution works, I’d go with that that.

But if it doesn’t …

Free geocoders tend to use (what else?) free government data.  I’d be willing to bet that the geocoder you used made use of TIGER data, from the US Census Bureau.  Yahoo! primarily makes use of Navteq data, and occasionally GDT (recently merged with Tele Atlas) data.  Both Navteq and GDT/Tele Atlas started with TIGER data for the US, and spend an enormous amount of expense in improving the data in a variety of ways, including repositioning the streets to more accurate coordinates.

Even if the TIGER data was more accurate than Navteq data, you’d get better looking results using a Navteq geocoder – become the points plotted would be more consistent with the underlying map.  Ideally, if every data source were perfect, and the geocoding algorithms equally robust, it would not matter which geocoder you used; but that is not the case.

I was looking around for an online Navteq geocoder – even one for $$$ - and I could not find one – could anyone help?  There’s one commercial service – http://www.geocode.com – that will geocode to Tele Atlas data (which would be more accurate, but it’s not the same source as the GDT data used by Yahoo! )

I think – but don’t know – that Yahoo! can’t provide this service due to its license with Navteq and GDT

Sorry if this isn’t a full answer, but it should give you some background.  Hopefully someone else has more complete answer.

-Alan

Hello Yahoo! folk,

On this page:

The following links are broken (404 errors):

Yahoo! Music Engine -

I've seen a few people ask about their plots being a bit off. I've
seen it too. When I saw it, I was certain it wasn't my geo-coding.
At the time, I thought the two levels (the map and the plots) had
gotten misaligned -- the plotted points were in the correct locations
in relationship to one another.

Unfortunately, I'm in my busiest time of year (I shouldn't be here!)
and haven't had a chance to recreate the problem. Maybe everyone who
has had it happen can help narrow it down.

What operating system are you using? What browser? What screen
resolution are you using? Did you change resolution before seeing
this happen? Did you change the size of the map from large to small
(or the other way around)? Did you click on your refresh/reload
button when it happened?

There's a common thread here -- we can find it!

I'm getting ready to release my first Yahoo maps app.
I have a question or two:

1) If I execute the POST request from my server to the
Yahoo services endpoint, obviously the REST return
document I subsequently pass back to the user's
browser will be "domained" from my web site's domain.
Does this break the "terms of service"?

2) I saw in the SDK download a Javascript example that
mentioned IFRAMEs. Am I allowed to frame the returned
document on one of my web pages if I do not alter any
of the Yahoo identification text/icons in any way? Or
does this break the "terms of service"? (I also would
like to know the exact attribution text/icons I need
to put on my web page to be in compliance, if any).

3) Is there anything else I might have missed in the
"terms of service" that I should really be aware
about?

Thanks,
Robert

On the *other* hand, I was looking at "js_post.ie" and
the Javascript source did *not* show CDATA[] tags

What is the "best practice" or general guideline here?

Hi,

I maintain the brainoff.com geocoder. Sorry if there were problems
earlier, I'll be investigating.

rockburger.com is a partial mirror of brainoff.com. It's better to
just stick with brainoff.

Thanks for responding!

When you say partial, can you elaborate? Does it have
full city & state data for the US & Canada?

I'll restore brainoff.com as the primary, but it would
be nice to have rockburger.com as a backup to use if
the brainoff.com query times out.

rockburger.com is a full mirror of the geocoder, but does not mirror
all of the other content on brainoff.com.

my webhost (dreamhost) was hit by a power outage this morning, so
brainoff.com was unreachable. not clear why rockburger.com stayed up,
it's at the same host. in any case, dreamhost has been very very
reliable, and i don't see this happening again often.

Does anyone know if the functionality for embedding yahoo maps into
web pages has been implemented yet! or a timescale for when such
functionality will be available.

Regards
john

hi, I want to know that is it possible on yahoo maps that a user
moves the mouse over the map and he can get the latitude and
longitude position. It's possible in google maps by using the api's to
get the Extends that's the starting point (upper left corner to down
right most corner).

Does yahoo maps provide Reverse GeoCoding?

PREFACE: To make sure it isn't anything I'm doing,
instead of making the POST request to Yahoo from my
server, I create an HTML document that triggers a
"POST" method form submission to an IFRAME contained
within the document. In other words, the document in
the IFRAME is "pure" Yahoo and sourced from Yahoo's
domain.

----

Just an FYI. The following Javascript statement in
the document I am getting back from you sometimes
generates a "not implemented" Javascript error (not
always).

wpd.getElementById('ymaprsz').onclick =
ymap_parent.mpoi_handler;

Thanks,
Robert

I would like to thank everyone for their reply. I posted up a test point so
maybe we can figure this out further:
http://api.maps.yahoo.com/Maps/V1/annotatedMaps?appid=ioffcampus&xmlsrc=http://i\
offcampus.com/maps/test.xml

I am using Windows XP Pro with 1024x768 resolution, but the same problem
appears when using Firefox 1.5 to change resolution to 800x600 (web developer
extension). Also occurs on my Netscape 8.0 and IE. However, when viewed with my
Opera browser, the points are totally off! But nonetheless, they are the same
difference away from each other. I guess the browser does make a difference.

This also occurs on a FreeBSD 4.11 machine using Firefox 1.0.6. Also, all of
the free geocoders listed in a previous message gave me the same coordinate.
I'm guessing Yahoo!'s data is just more accurate.

I have not tried using a small vs large map, I'll try that next.

Thanks!
James

Hi all,

I'm just starting with yahoo maps and I really find the information
about yahoo maps confusing where can I get a good example to create an
embeded map in my site to give some directions to the users base on
street, city, state and zipcode.

CData is used to "escape" XML "reserved" (or prohibited) characters. If
the attribute or element text contains &, <, >, ', or ", you could put a
CData wrapper around it. Or, you can xmlencode that manually by
converting them to &, <, >, ', or ".

Sometimes you want to display an & in the HTML, which means you will
need to both xmlencode AND htmlencode. So in those cases, a & becomes
&amp;. Fun?

I was looking at the Yahoo Maps online documentation
and in the section labeld "Sample XML File", the XML
text shown had CDATA[] tags wrapping the text
elements.

On the *other* hand, I was looking at "js_post.ie" and
the Javascript source did *not* show CDATA[] tags
wrapping the text items.

What is the "best practice" or general guideline here?

Thanks,
Robert
