Subject: Exporting Yahoo Map Routes for GIS Analysis

I am in the midst of figuring out a good way to export Yahoo Map
directions/route (e.g. KML file) into a GIS to perform a buffer around
the route, find addresses from a database inside the buffer zone, and
redisplay the results in Yahoo Maps. Any suggestions on how I might
go about doing this, and software or databases that would be good for
such a job? Thanks!

Is there a way I can limit a map and all it's features top one
particular city?

I want to make a mashup that involves montreal only and user
interaction with the map, but if they get the whole map I have to make
checks and stuff to see if they acted within the bounds and frankly,
I'm lazy.

I think yahoo map uses ajax and there is a specific key called app id, so am
not sure whether you will be able to export it.
Also , if you read t&c you may find things fuzzy about your idea.

Please verify t&c before putting effort in the same.

Sikunj

It is possible to restrict only you have to code accordingly.

If you look at

http://developer.yahoo.com/maps/rest/V1/geocode.html

the limit is 5000 queries per IP address per day. Since the geocoder
api uses XML, you need to set a proxy on your server to pass the
result on to your user. Therefore, the IP address is that of your
server. If each user wants one pair of addresses - that's 2500 users
per day; not super high. Yahoo! pays the data supplier on a per
access basis, so we're effectively subsidizing use of this api. It's
not there for users to simply crank through long lists of addresses.

You may be able to use our tools in a different way, that would raise
your limit significantly, that would follow the terms of use. If you
use a Yahoo! map to present the two locations to your user by placing
markers on a map (either the AS3 flash api or the AJAX api). When you
place a marker, you can specify it using the street address.

Example using AJAX api, addr1 and addr2 have user entered street
addresses. (http://developer.yahoo.com/maps/ajax/V3.8/index.html)

map.drawZoomAndCenter(addr1, 5);
var coord1 = map.getCenterLatLon(); // coord1 is a YGeoPoint object
var marker1 = new YMarker(coord1,'id1')
map.addOverlay(marker1);

map.drawZoomAndCenter(addr2, 5);
var coord2 = map.getCenterLatLon(); // coord2 is a YGeoPoint object
var marker2 = new YMarker(coord2,'id2')
map.addOverlay(marker2);

coord1 and coord2 have lat/lon pairs which could be used to calculate
distance (There's a "distance" method you can use).

This sort of interaction - the moving of the map - may make complete
sense for your application - it's not batch geocoding, which the API
is not intended to support. A user types in an address, the map
shifts, it calculates the distance from the previous point.

This is limited to 50,000 interaction per IP address, and the IP
address is that of your end user - not your server. That's almost
like making no limitation.

I hope this helps.

Is it possible to pass a DOM structure other than a simple text node
to openSmartWindow() YMarker method? I notice you can pass a HTML
string with links etc. I would like to be able to pass some links with
attached event handlers -- Yes I know I can use the onClick="", but
would prefer to generate a DOM structure and pass that.

Thanks,
Joe.

PS: the yws-maps-ajax group looks like a ghost town: it's linked off
the official API docs page and doesn't inspire confidence. Suggest to
Yahoo people either moderate out the spam or delete it.

Yes you can pass a DOM structure . You have to first make DOM structure as a
string and then send it across to the event handler.

The Yahoo! geocoder api does support many countries around the world. Just
use the "location=" parameter, followed by an encoded string with all of the
address components.

Hi,

I'm trying to use the example on this page:
http://developer.yahoo.com/maps/flash/jsGettingStarted.html#marker

..on this test page:

http://jamapages.com/static/maps/test.html

Now, this is just a copy of the example code on their site (with my
Yahoo developer ID)

It just won't show the marker :/

Has anyone got any examples of this working? I've been trying
literally for the last 4 hours to get it working :( I was using Google
Maps, but they don't allow you to use your API keys on sub-domains
(which sucks, as I had it all working exactly how I wanted it, but as
soon as I tried accessing it on sub-domains, it spewed up an error
about the API key not being valid).

Anyway, back to the current issue =)

I've tried almost all of those examples of that page - but still no
success.

Any help would be MUCH appreciated!

TIA

Andy

Also can someone please point to where I can read more about the input

Here's one example URL. It's the same story, though, on every website
where a map is to be displayed.

http://www.mapquest.com/maps/map.adp?country=US&addtohistory=&address=19111+Prun\
eridge+Ave&city=Cupertino&state=CA&zipcode=95014&homesubmit=Get+Map

Yahoo! Groups mangled the URL - I should know this happens to long URLs by
now; I always get rather frustrated when it trying to explain things to
people. This works fine, and we do have support for many countries outside
of the US.

Here it is without the http:// in front of it. Use "location=" rather than
the parsed parameters.

local.yahooapis.com/MapsService/V1/geocode?appid=YD-9G7bey8_JXxQP6rxl.fBFGgC
dNjoDMACQA--&location=10+Downing+St%2C+London%2C+England

Thanks Alan,

the link you provided is not working... actully I have seen yahoo map
webservice for the US called geocoder.US, I need such type of web
service for Europe or rest of the world, so I can simply add a web
reference in my project and then use it. do have any idea about such
web services? I would be greatfull to you if I'll get such kind of
web service for Europe or rest of the world.

Subject: Print text from selected marker's smartwindow to sidebar

My main problem is that I cannot copy and paste from the text in
smartwindows. Since I think this is not something that can be fixed, I
am trying to have the text from the selected marker's smartwindow
print to a sidebar box.

I can print the text in the selected marker's smartwindow to a blank
page with the code below, but not in the sidebar box:

Could someone please help me figure out how to get the text to print
to the sidebar box?

Thanks,
Lela

Javascript:
...// capture click on marker to open smart window
				 YEvent.Capture(marker,EventsList.MouseClick, function() {
marker.openSmartWindow(swData) });

var info = YEvent.Capture(marker,EventsList.MouseClick, function() {
document.write(swData) });

				 return marker;

			 };

Code in INdex.php to print var info in the sidebar:
<div class="sidebaritem">
		 <script type="text/javascript">
		 document.write(info);
		 </script>
	 </div>
