Subject: AJAX - Print Skewing

About two weeks ago I started having problems being able to print from
the Yahoo maps AJAX api. It still seems to return the data properly on
the screen, but when I print, it's like the map is trying to print two
different maps. The printed 'look' is very similar to having sections
of the map not properly painted in. This has been working for the last
year without issue.
I'm using sending the javascript to http://api.maps.yahoo.com/ajaxymap?
v=3.8

Is anyone else having this problem? Was there an update that I missed?

About two weeks ago, the page I wrote that uses the AJAX api started printing
incorrectly. It still renders ok on the screen, but when I print it, the map
looks like its trying to force two different maps into the map container. I've
tried several different printers and drivers as well has had others try it, all
with the same results. It seems to be affecting IE6 and IE7, but Firefox3.05
prints fine.

Did I miss an update, or was there a change in the expected javascript?
Originally I wrote this to use the 3.0 api and its been working fine - both on
screen and printing - for the last year. Since the newest version is 3.8, I
thought that might be the problem. So I tried changing the script source to
point to the 3.8 instance (http://api.maps.yahoo.com/ajaxymap?v=3.8) but I still
get the same issues printing.

Any ideas?

I would like to use the Geocoding API, but can't find a detailed guide
other than this:

http://developer.yahoo.com/maps/rest/V1/geocode.html

My issues are:

1. The Zip field says integer. I tried a Canadian zip (non-integer)
and it worked just fine, so why is the field labeled an integer?

2. What are all the countries in the Geocoding API?

3. What countries have a State field in the Geocoding API?

4. What countries have a postal code (zip) in the Geocoding API?

Thank you

Hello everyone

I am having difficulties getting the GeoCode for cities with umlauts in
their names like "Hölstein", a small place in Switzerland.

In my PHP script I am already urlencoding the city with urlencode()...

The whole URL looks like:

http://api.local.yahoo.com/MapsService/V1/geocode?appid=xxx&street=17+Hauptstras\
se&zip=4434&city=H%F6lstein&state=CH&output=php

I am receiving the coordinates for the middle of Switzerland. That's
wrong. I am sure, it's because of the umlaut. If I change ö to oe, it'll
work.

So how can I encode cities with umlauts properly?

Thank you for your help

Hello,

If I use the "traditional" service (http://maps.yahoo.com

I¹m not sure why printing behavior has changed, but you might want to look
at an alternate API for more printer friendly pages:

However, is it possible to request them based on an X, Y, Z basis in

From my searching, I think I have determined that actual driving times

What I am trying to do, is write an application that can grab an

Has anyone solved this problem? Is it even solvable?
I can't imagine there is no way to get a modified drive time based on

Can I please get some advice from anyone with some experience on this

Sorry, but not via a public, published api that meets our terms of service.
(Obviously, we have a tile serving mechanism, but that's not for direct
access.)

It's possible to do this, but most traffic data sources are incomplete. We
don't make this available via a public api (or via our regular maps).

The problem is that most traffic data sources are based on sensor placed on
highways by the DOTs. These can accurately measure the traffic speeds on
the highways - but not on adjacent roads which have no sensors. You know
speed at the sensor points - but you know nothing of traffic jams elsewhere.
This is more problematic if you try to re-route based on this data, because
you don't know if the side roads offer a free passage, or if they are just
as jammed as the main road.

Some very serious attempts have been made by gathering data from vehicles.
The best know effort is DASH Navigation (http://www.dash.net/) - they
marketed a personal navigation device for a short period that was not,
unfortunately, commercially successful. They are reinventing themselves to
license their technology.

There's also the mobile millennium project:

http://traffic.berkeley.edu/

This uses cell phones to determine traffic speeds. The wide availability of
cell phones means they may be able to collect an awful lot of data points -
so long as people download the free software and let themselves be
anonymously tracked for traffic purposes. I don't know how successful they
have been distinguishing between people driving with their cell phone
sitting in the car, and those walking along a sidewalk. Solve that problem,
and they would have an excellent source of traffic data.

Hi Chethan,

Read through http://developer.yahoo.com/yui/dragdrop/

You need to include the appropriate libraries to use the YUI drag and
drop, as given in the "Getting Started" section.

Then you could give either the marker element itself or its id to the
constructor of DD, as follows:

var dd = new YAHOO.util.DD("my_id");
  or
var dd = new YAHOO.util.DD(element);

That would make you marker draggable.

Something that I quickly wrote up to illustrate this to you is below.
Sample code: http://www.raja-gopal.com/code/draggable_markers.html
Source: View source of the previous link or
http://www.raja-gopal.com/code/draggable_markers.txt

Hope that was helpful. Feel free to post back if u need any more help.

Raj

btw,

if you have to update the place name when a drag completes, or do any
other action, you could use the onDragDrop. Something like,

ddMarker.onDragDrop = function(element,id) {

< Here, do whatever you want with the draggable marker available as an
overlay element >

}

should help.

I am trying to use this API to fetch ZIP4 from street address. It works on some,

Any ideas why this might not be working? YahooMapsAPI says the street cannot be

But you can see it on the map here.

I have this on a bunch of streets that appear to really exist.

Hi,

A few days ago, Yahoo hybrid maps accessed via API v3.5.2 suddenly began
rendering with extremely low-quality overlay graphics for streets and names. The
rendering issue seems to occur only in Internet Explorer (6 and 7) and Firefox 3

You can verify the problem by visiting the URL below using IE and then Firefox

Hey everyone,

I'm trying to show a line from Dallas, TX to New Zealand; however, YMap doesn't
build the YPolyline correctly. I want it to go through the shortest route (i.e.
Over Hawaii, not Africa).

Also, when I try to do a drawZoomAndCenter, it returns a level of 18, which
causes it to zoom as far in, into the center, showing nothing.

Here's the example I'm working with. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks in advance!
-Tommy.
