I am biased, however I'd invite you to test the Zemanta API. It is available at
http://developer.zemanta.com
It tries to figure out what the most important terms in the text are and also
disambiguates them to exact entities. Look under two lists that you get back:
keywords and markup.
I am open for any questions about it...

Earlier we announced that the Term Extraction service would be discontinued as

Dear Jonathan,
We are developing tools to allow to describe and search chemical
structures. These tools possess unusual features allowing reach
semantic descriptions. We are also planning to develop an encyclopedia
of organic chemistry which is expected to mimmic the chemist
perceptions. The encyclopedia (EncOrE)*is expected to be at the
research level, be built collaboratively but under strong editorial
supervision. It will use a dictionary we are modeling and ontologies
we are creating with Protege in a collaborative work with Stanford
University (Prof. Marc Musen). Two Nobel Prize winners are part of the
scientific advisory board. Could that interest Yahoo?
This encyclopedia is intended to help students at university and
researchers in chemistry it will involve databases and can be
supported by IUPAC (Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry). Is it
possible to get your advise?
I have not yet use the term extraction tool but will soon be
interested to extract chemical terms to organize them for the search
engine we are developing.

Yahoo!Local API v3 documentation
(http://developer.yahoo.com/search/local/V3/localSearch.html) states that I can
use an asterisk ("*") for the query parameter to act as a wildcard. I'm getting
zero results when I use "*" in the following REST query (replace your own
AppId):
http://local.yahooapis.com/LocalSearchService/V3/localSearch?appid=[appid]&latit\
ude=35.849602&longitude=-86.385002&radius=5&results=20&sort=distance&query=*
I get the full 20 results if I replace "*" with "pizza", so the rest of the
query is working as expected. Any ideas?
As I posted on the yahoo group:
Yeah, the link is broken because Yahoo deleted the Local Search
section of the forum. Here is the direct link to the list:
www.albertotretti.com/files/cat_id.txt
Hope it helps!

Hi,
I am developing an iphone application that will utilize Yahoo Local Search API.
I have several questions for my application.
According to http://developer.yahoo.com/search/local/V3/localSearch.html, The
Local Search service is limited to 5,000 queries per IP address per day and to
noncommercial use."
Does it apply the same way for iphone application?
As for the attribution issue, according to
http://developer.yahoo.com/attribution/#attribBadge,
I have to embed an html code in my application.
I am confused on how to put the Yahoo web service lbadge since my iPhone
application is not html-based.
I know I can use a webview to do it. However, when users click it, it is going
to be really messy.
Is there any better way to put the attribution?
Also, for getting the app id, i need to type in the application url. If the
application does not have an url since it is an iphone aplication, what should I
type in?
Finally, is there is any different terms of use for iphone application from the
normal terms of use (http://info.yahoo.com/legal/us/yahoo/api/api-2140.html)?
Thanks in advance,
Fransiskus Xaverius

Not really. I am working with the Google Distance algorithm, and for the formula
I need to know the total indexed pages of the web search (Google, Yahoo,
whatever). The previous answer did not work. If you just put the site
restriction in a query, it does not return any result, cause any real query has
been done (just the restriction).

Which 1000 of all the results are returned? Is it random or are the results
sorted by popularity for example?
I would like to add a sort parameter.
The second suggestion (even more important for me), is the option to only return
one inlink per domain. So if you query the first 1000 results, they could be
only from a couple of unique domains. Because there are so many links from those
domains (in the footer of every page for example).
Thanks for at least reading this. :-)
Dear Everyone,
I know that Yahoo BOSS Search on search on multiple sites. like
sites:cnn.com,abc.com.
but if I would like to search in more details. like
sites:edition.cnn.com/2009/WORLD/,abc.go.com/schedule
including dedicated subfolders under dedicated domain.
I have tried the following 2 methods but not working.
Method 1 : (2 site folders delimited by comma append at the end of the search
phrase.)
http://boss.yahooapis.com/ysearch/web/v1/{search words}
site:edition.cnn.com/2009/WORLD/,abc.go.com/schedule
Method 2 : defined in the optional arguments
{appid:[appid], format:json, sites:"sports.yahoo.com/nfl,go.com/schedule"}
See if someone has any good idea.
Regards,
Eddie
Hi!
I'm using yahoo BOSS news search for Hungarian city related news. Yahoo
sometimes misinterprets the pages, and extracts the wrong title.

Hi,
I have noticed that the service does not work correctly or I am doing
something totally wrong. I URL encode my text, for example:
C# programming
However, yws returns/extracts:
C programming
Someone else has verified this (he used PHP and I used C#/.Net).
Any feedback would be very much appreciated. Many thanks.
Best wishes,
Christian

I am trying to use http://local.yahooapis.com/LocalSearchService/V3/localSearch
to get some local business data. I am far below the 5000/day query limit. The
API seems to be sporadically working for me, and also seems to be doing some
sort of referral checking. Sometimes the query will work, and 5 minutes later
the exact same query will fail with a 503 or 403 error message. Interestingly,
whenever it fails, I can load the query into a web browser and it works without
problem. The sporadic failing only happens when I use a PHP script on my
server, leading me to believe that Yahoo is blocking certain referrals, or
certain IPs. Is there anything I can do?
