um here's something y'all might be interested in.

---------- Forwarded message ----------
Date: Sun, 31 May 1998 18:34:01 GMT
From: Karl Thomsen <mosfog@...>
Newsgroups: alt.zines
Subject: zine review zines.... updated to May 31, 1998!!!!!!!

Okay, Okay.... I know I just posted this list, but over the past few days
I've discovered quite a few updates to this list, so I figured it was worth
reposting... a few zines have been added and the info on a few zines have
been updated... SO CHECK IT OUT! Cheers!

Zine Review Zines
A resource list of zines dedicated
to reviewing zines!

Gathered by Karl Thomsen. Updated May 31, 1998.

In this chaotic zine culture of ours it is hard to keep track of what's
going on around us. Fortunately for us, there are an abundance of zine
review zines out there to help us try to keep track of it. Oh heck, none of
them are perfect, but they do have a lot to offer. They are a valuable
resource to be aware of, whether you have a zine you want the world to know
about, or just want to know what's going on. For those who give a shit,
this zine review zine list is for you. It is maintained as a resource list
at the Sunburn web site and will be updated/reposted from time to time.
Feel free to download and redistribute this list as you wish - that's what
this list is here for. I'm not here to say whether they suck or not, but
just to give an idea into what each review zine has to offer so you know
whether it's worth your time and money to check it out. Whether it sucks is
up to you to decide. This list represents all that I am aware of at the
moment, so if there's something missing or incorrect, then please let me
know.
When dealing with these review zines, there are a few things to be aware
of. If you're sending a zine in for review, please do not forget to include
all important information about it. Information such as mailing address,
email (& web page?), price (& ordering info), publication schedule, if
you're trade friendly, etc. If your zine contains certain "offensive"
subject matter (nudity, sex, extreme violence), it would be a good idea to
request a written age statement from people. If sending your zine
internationally, keep in mind that Customs Officials often confiscate
material of "obscene" subject matter.

Amusing Yourself to Death
"The guide to surfing the papernet"
Standard magazine format
Editor: Ruel Gaviola
Published: Bimonthly
Last known issue: April 1998 (#11)
Next issue due May/June 1998 (#12)
Sample issue $3 ($4 Canada/Mexico, $5 World. Audio version $4.)
Subscription: 6 issues for $18
Email: rgaviola@...
Web: http://www.aznet.net/~lorax
Mail: PO Box 91934, Santa Barbara, CA 93190-1934
"AYTD is a bimonthly publication that reviews and promotes the
independent press, primarily zines and other self-published works. AYTD
offers useful resources for self-publishers: news, articles, advice,
commentary, contacts, letters and much more. Our staff is dedicated to
being a positive part of the small-press community and we look forward to
working with those who share similar ideas and goals."
[A good sized review zine with in depth reviews and all sorts of zine
news & resources. It comes out frequently and has a lot to offer. Well
worth a look.]

Broken Pencil
"The guide to alternative publications in Canada"
Standard magazine format
**Specifically reviews Canadian publications
Editor: Hal Niedzviecki & Hilary Clark
Published: Twice a year, in April & October
Last known issue: April, 1998 (#7)
Next issue due October 1998
Sample issue $5.00
Subscription: 3 issues for $12, 6 for $23
Email: halpen@...
http://www.interlog.com/~halpen
Mail: P.O. box 203, Stn P, Toronto, Ontario, M5S 2S7, CANADA
[Recommended if you want to get to know about the small press in Canada.
Although the reviews tend to be more entertaining than honest, they often
do let the zine speak for itself by offering up samples of the zine's
contents (often reprinting articles or graphics/comics)! Although they only
review Canadian material, it gives them a chance to give a more in depth
view
of the scene. Reviews are broken up into the sections of the country where
the zines originate from.]

Factsheet 5
"Your perpetually surprising guide to the zine revolution"
Standard magazine format
Editor: Christopher Becker
Published: 2-3 times a year
Last known issue: #63 March 1998
Next planned issue: #64 (#65 November)
Sample issue $6 U.S.
Subscription: 6 issues $20 (US)
Deadline for zines for issue #64 has passed
Deadline for zines for issue #65 is August 13,1998
Email: seth@...
Web: http://www.factsheet5.com
Mail: P.O. Box 170099, San Francisco, CA, USA 94117-0099
[Highly recommended. This is the Big One of review zines and it shows.]
Funhouse
"Digging in the underground"
5.5" x 8.5" format
Editor: Brian Johnson
Published sporadically.
Last known issue: #6 (1997)
Sample Issue $1.00
Mail: 11 Werner Road, Greenville, PA, 16125-9434, USA
[A casual friendly review zine which categorizes zines according to the
cover price. For a buck it offers up a healthy serving of reviews. Worth a
look.]

Indy Unleashed
5.5" x 8.5" format
Editor: Owen Thomas
Published sporadically.
Last known issue: #4, Winter 1998
Sample Issue $2.00
Email: vlorbik@...
http://people.delphi.com/vlorbik
Mail: P.O. Box 9651, Columbus, Ohio, USA 43209
"Indy Unleashed is written in a pleasant chatty style, but offers little
competition to such reviews as Zine World or AYTD."
[Done as more of a supplement to his other zine Ten Page News. What this
review zine lacks in size it makes up for in the reviews. Owen seems to
review material that interests him, and usually offers a lengthy review
similar in style to AYTD. If you're looking for a casual read, it's worth a
look.]

MSRRT Newsletter
"Library Alternatives"
Standard magazine format

Email: lahtinen.palonen@...
Mail: Talvipaivamseisaus Prod., Timo Palonen, Hepokuja 6 B 26, FIN-01200
Vantaa, Finland
[A very unique review zine from Finland. A playful punk sensibility
brings together reviews of music tapes/CDs (international independents,
with reviews in English), Finnish language zines (in Finnish), and
international English language zines (in English). The reviews in here are
very spirited and casual but honest. Worth a look.]

Party Pooper
"Ottawa's Own Indie Fanzine"
8.5" x 7" format (xeroxed)

http://www.geocities.com/SoHo/4758/red.html
Mail: P.O. Box 153, Station 'B', Ottawa, Ontario, K1P 6C4 Canada
[A double sided legal sheet folded in half, semi-seasonal list of 20-25
reviews of self-published and small press zines, comix and chapbooks from
around the world. A funky collage is featured on the cover of the zines
reviewed inside. The reviews tend to be fairly dry, but they give a good
idea about what each zine contains. Overall a very thrifty review zine that
has a lot to offer for it's price. Worth a look.]

Ralph Recommends
Editor: Ralph Alfonso
Sample Issue 50¢
Email: ralpha6982@...
http://www.bongobeat.com (updated regularly)

this column on the internet and on my web site. Some reviews are also
featured in my monthly zine, RALPH."
[Ralph offers up a spirited but straight forward review of zines sent
his way.]

Resource for Radicals
Standard magazine format (spiral bound)
Editor: Brian Burch
Published: Annually (in August)
Last Known issue: 1997
1998 Issue currently underway
Sample Issue: $10
Accepts submissions all year round
Email: burch@...
Fax: (416) 651-9700
Mail: Box 73620, 509 St. Clair Ave. West, Toronto, Ontario, M6C 1C0
"Resources For Radicals is an annual annotated bibliography. We welcome
review material at any time. We are interested in magazines, books,
broadsheets, pamphlets and other print material devoted to progressive
social change. We aim for a publication date of August 15th of each year.
Comments, ideas and suggestions are always welcome. Resources For Radicals
is a project of Toronto Action for Social Change."
[If you're looking for a resource listing for publications on
progressive social change, this is a good place to start. Or if there's a
publication you think they should know about, drop them a line!]

Small Press Creative Explosion
7" x 4.25" format
**Reviews submissions from subscribers only
Editor: Timothy Corrigan
Publisher: New Voice Media
Published monthly
Last known issue: #5 (late 1997)
Sample issue $1.00
Subscription: $12 for 12 issues
Mail: PO Box 25, Houghton, NY, 14744, USA
[A new monthly comic review zine that only reviews submissions from
subscribers (but there are exceptions). Brought back from the dead, it
previously existed during the small press comics "explosion" of the 1980's.
For a buck it's a good value, with each issue jammed with news, reviews,
letters, etc. Unfortunately, it seems to be out of touch with the
self-publishing world of today. Or at least that's my perception.]

Small Press Zone
The Home of Small Press Comics [web site]
http://www.cloudnet.com/~hamlinck/spz.htm
Editor: Andy Hamerlinck
Updated regularly
Email: genius@...
Mail: 839 16th Ave. S., St. Cloud, MN, USA 56301
[This web site is dedicated to North American small press comic books.
Although Andy had given notice that he had decided to stop updating his
website, he's back!]

TRS (The Review Sheet)
Single page review zine
Editor: Peter Ashton
Published: sporadically
Last known issue: November 1997
Next issue slated for February
(at least five or six scheduled for 1998)
Sample issue: SAE in Britain
(overseas costs one IRC or $1 US)
Mail: 29 Wheatsheaf Road, Birmingham B16 ORZ, UK
[A single page British review zine for small press comics from around
the world. For those interested in the British comics scene, it's well
worth a look.]

Underground Zine Scene
Editor:John Ridge
Published Sporadically
Last known issue: #8
Next issue: #9 (coming soon)
You can submit zines for issue #10 now
Sample Issue $3 US
Email: zscene@...
Mail: 316 E. Main St, Sebewang, MI,48759, USA
Web:http://www.azstarnet.com/~zscene/uzs1.htm
[Focusing on worldwide music zines, but also reviews a diverse range of
zines.]

Zine Guide
Standard magazine format
Editor: Brent Ritzel
Publisher: Tail Spins Inc.
Published Sporadically
There is still time to submit zines for issue #2
Last known issue: #1 (late 1997)
Next issue: #2, expected by July 31st
Issue #1: $4 ($6 Canada/Mexico, $7 Overseas)
Issue #2: $6 ($8 Canada/Mexico, $10 Overseas)
Email: tailspin@...
Mail: Zine Guide, PO Box 5467, Evanston, Illinois, 60204, USA
"Complete contact information for 1500+ zines and assorted independent
publications. Complete contents, cost, pages, size, and production quality
of all available issues of every zine listed. Indexes of bands, record
labels, and all subjects/topics."
[Although listed as a zine review zine, it is more of a zine directory
with occasionally brief reviews from zine survey responses. Survey forms
come with each issue (or just make up your own?) to list your 5 favourite
zines with enough room for a brief review. Serves as an impressive resource
as an up to date directory for many zines, but not very helpful as a review
zine in general. Music zines in particular are well represented. If you
want them to know you exist, send in your zine, and while you're at it,
send in a survey to alert them to other zines they should know about! Go on
- get moving!]

Zine World
"Freedom of the press is for everyone"
5.5" x 11" format
Editor: Doug Holland
Published: Seasonally
Last known issue: Spring 1998 (#6)
Sample Issue: $3.50 USA, $4 Canada/Mexico, $5 worldwide
Subscriptions:
    US: 4 issues $12, 8 issues $23
    Canada/Mexico: 4 issues $13, 8 issues $25
    Worldwide: 4 issues $19, 8 issues $36
Mail: 537 Jones #2386, SF, CA 94102 USA
"We're not interested in anything from mainstream media, or anything
fancified enough to have a UPC, ISBN, or ISSN. Such stuff might be
wonderful or it might be wretched, but it's not what we're about. And no,
we're not playing Zinier-than-thou; we simply want to save our pages for
actual zines that need the coverage."
[This zine has an attitude and it knows how to use it. But if you can
look beyond that, it is a very provocative and informative read. This is a
great place to find out what's going on in the world of underground press.]

Zum
Standard magazine format
Editor: Paul Schroeder
Published Annually.
Last known issue: 1997 (#10)
$5.00 American funds for a sample copy
17 Lime Street, Todmorden, Lancs, OL 14 5JN, UK
[Recommended. An impressive indie comic review zine from Britain. A good
place to catch up on British comic publications, as well as a sampling of
European and North American comics. Each issue is a thick read, chockful of
reviews! The reviews usually have a lot to say, and a sampling of the
artwork is included near the review. It's main drawback is it's annual
publication schedule. Despite that, it's well worth a look.]

DECEASED REVIEW ZINES...

Bleeding Velvet Octopus
5.5" x 8.5" format
Editor: Michael Halchin
Last known issue: #12 (Spring '98).
Sample issue $1.50
Email: mhalchin@...
http://members.aol.com/mhalchin/index.html
Mail: PO Box 25760, Los Angeles, CA 90025
[Issue #12 will be the final issue for Bleeding Velvet Octopus. Issue
#12 and back issues are still available. Bleeding Velvet Octopus offers up
a spirited collection of minimally invasive reviews of magazines, comics,
music, spoken word, chap books & books. ]

Bypass
[A British review zine, presumed dead. If anyone knows otherwise, please
let me know.]

Subway Posters
[Although the name of this zine still comes up, it is unfortunately
deceased.]

Hey I'm new to this list so I thought I'd introduce myself... I'm also kinda new
to the zine world. I really like Escargot and Flashing Astonisher; that's all I
can think of right off the top of my head (I'm pretty brain dead from work
today), but I'm sure there's a lot more out there that I've seen that I like
too! I also enjoy alot of the indiepop oriented e-zines, even though I've been
told that the e-zine is pretty much a no-no to talk about in the print zine
world! (But seeing how this is an emailing list, I think it's ok!)
Anyway, I joined this list because I'm starting my own zine. There's a link in
my sig so you can find out all about it! And no it is not not not an ezine, it's
gonna come out in print form but I'll have a website devoted to it as well. Do
check it out!
Sorry this is so vague but it's time to go home now! Yea!
Oh, I'm also terribly sorry if this email has a bunch of random letters attached
to the bottom of it; for some reason some mailing lists don't get along well
with Outlook...
Bye!

Hey Pat!

I'm headed to New Yawk City this morning... Spur of the moment thing.
It's an 11 hour drive. Closer to Schlong Island than I was before
anyhow... Going to a show at the Continental on friday (or saturday)
and a show at Coney Island High on saturday (or friday). I know one of
them is one hell of a rockn'roll bonanza... With the B-movie Rats
playing. One of my favorite bands.

heh heh I've only just recently been to a big city... And now I'm goin
to New York! Oh shit! I'm a hick.

Don't know if you'll be at either of these shows, if there even anywhere
near where you live for that matter, but thought I'd tell ya anyhow.
I'm 5'1, short brown hair, blue eyes, prolly wearing black boots black
tights short black skirt and a light blue or white tank top. I'm 19,
look like I'm 16. Name's Jessa. I'll be with my lil bro, who is taller
than I with thick-framed artsy fartsy black glasses undoubtedly wearing
very baggy jeans. He walks just like Shaggy, from Scooby Doo. Name's
Landon. It's a billion to one shot, but what the hell? It's always fun
to meet new folk.

Righto, see ya.

the reason it is made out to be so bad is because it totally sucks in
practice, in theory its great.. except the fact that when you have wages
that are the same for everyone, whos gonna wanna spend the 4 yrs in college
to be a doctor when u get paid the same as someone who didnt? face it, by
nature humans are greedy sons of a bitches and most of the time they are
gonna be looking out for their own good, not societies. im not saying
capitalism is bettter. capitalism in theory and practice
sucks. no system is perfect... or even good, all of it sucks come to think
of it..

Anyway an great elaboration about the communist thing is not in order because
I am in no way an expert on it.. I have read some things, and i do know that
it is in no way as bad as people make it out to be. Seriously, capitalism isnt
really much better. You should read the communist manifesto.. its really long,
but it just shows how something like that could really work.. and yes papa

his family and how work is accomplished
  heh heh.
A zine trade would be great!!. send me your address and ill get the new issue

yeah just did.. i'll put a note on my page saying its only for print zines.
i hate e-zines too, there's just not a lot to em. nothing you can hold in
your hand & save forever, no artwork unless they send .gif files, and it
takes all of about 5 mins to put em together....

The communist not being bad bit.

The Queers are one of my most favorite bands. Especially the Wimpy
stuff. But I like it all, lemme tell ya. They have broken up (awhile
ago, actually)... Did you know? Joe King has been in and out of drug
rehab for the past year or so. Yikes! I stood outside his window above
the Ceres Street Bakery in Portsmouth once, practically drooling. hah.
So rock star hero worship, huh?

exclusively my writings and art... There are a number of folks writing
for Kiss My Grits. We're ALL small-towners, and from the north eastern
portion of the US. Woowoo your dream has come truuuuueeee!

I thought up a zine idea about 5 months or so ago and I started it but
havent been working on it for months. then i decided to start another zine
about punk and hardcore scenes in small towns in the south. that one ill
probably stick with if i find any writers..
be really cool if a bunch of people started doing that for their area small

It's a-workin.

I read Cometbus, FOE, MRR, Ugly Things, Phlox, Living in Oblivian, and a
number of others...

I am working on "Kiss My Grits" issue numero uno at the moment.

I live in the NY-PA-OH tristate region, near Erie Pennsylvania... On a
dairy farm. Life in general is extremely isolated here. I'm a huge pop
punk fan. Ummmm errr... I like the color blue, and geeky men with
little potbellies. I do not like blue geeky men with little potbellies,
however... ie brainy or papa smurf. I have never been abducted by
extra-terrestrials. My hair is brown, eyes blue, legs short. I stuffed
a wadded dirty note down the commode in fourth grade and flooded an
entire hall of my school with feces. Whoops. Too much information,
perhaps. That was classified.

wink wink,
