I think it is dying a slow death. As far as I can remember (and I might be
wrong) Yahoo is now putting their location-based-service energy into FireEagle.
Cell submission is still not working for me. Does it work for anyone? Does
anyone "official" even monitor this group anymore, or is the API dying a slow
death?
Hello,
I am new to ZoneTag.
I am writing a location related application for Android.
I am looking for some starter sample Java code for parsing location information
retrieved via ZoneTag.
Could anyone help me?
Thanks.
Alex Donnini
Always seem to fail for me (using my app token) no matter what.
Even tried the sample URL with the sample app token, data is not ignored, simply
fails like the rest.

Dear ZoneTag users
ZoneTag (and Zurfer) will be offline on March 4 and 5 (PDT) while we
upgrade our servers and move them to a different facility. You will
not be able to upload any new photos or receive any suggested tags
during this time. Normal service will be resumed on March 6, 2009. We
apologize for any inconvenience that this may cause.
Happy ZoneTagging

Hi Michael
We do not have much coverage in Dubai but you could easily fix that by
adding the data yourself. You can either enter it directly into the
ZoneTag app when you upload photos or you can add data through the
API. Once you ener the location once we will learn it and return it
for future location requests.

Dear all,
I'm a web developer in Dubai, and would like to get Zonetag to work
here, but I always get a "Invalid Location values" msg, whenever I
sent my data (to convert cell-id into city). Is this because the
middle east is not mapped (yet)?
Thank you,

Vadim, ZoneTag learns cell tower location when users use ZoneTag together with a GPS device. Take a look at the ZoneTag FAQs for more detail. Fire Eagle has a number of different access methods - do you have a beta invitation? The site has all the details...

Hi Mor,
Thank you for your reply.
So where do your users typically obtain the cellD? From FireEagle?
If this is the case, is it possible to access FireEagle using mobile interface only? I suppose the legal problems can be solved with sending the user a prompt to OK, is this correct?
Also, if some kind of consent is required, what is the reason you / FireEagle does not simply obtain the coordinates instead of the cellID?
Subject: Re: [zonetag-dev] Commercial use: getting telco's to play along
Good questions! Unfortunately, the current ZT coverage leaves a lot to be desired. We hope that Yahoo will offer a more complete cell API some time in the future, but in the meantime, Fire Eagle is your best best for cell tower data (with a better coverage, although still far from complete). Our data is simply coming from crowdsourcing, similar to Google's My Location.
About approaching the mobile operators... good luck :) I really don't know, I guess it's a question of how interesting your service is. I don't know of any application that made use of carrier location data so far... Google may be getting some data in some countries (rumored to at least) but who knows if that's really the case.

Hi ZoneTag developers,
An incredibly useful service! We were looking for something like this for ages.
We are in the process of deploying a multi-function LBS, which is primarily SMS operated. Obviously, the consolidators like Clickatell don't have access to server-based location pinging with Nokia platforms, and mobile operators are as cooperative as Godzilla.
We are already thinking about alternative strategies, and cell ID is one of them. FireEagle is good, but it requires internet-enabled phones; we'd want a more low-tech approach.
There are two questions here, though:
1. Just how comprehensive your maps are? I found this:
and while the effort seems to be ongoing, it really doesn't look to be suitable for commercial apps. Do you get yours from mobile operators, or "reverse engineer" the lists like that one?
2. What is the proper way to approach the mobile operators? Who are the interested parties there? What is the "carrot" we can offer them? Is there a way to bypass them and get the cellID from elsewhere? We have the money, the infrastructure and the technology, but no leads in the mobile industry.

I've been looking at the software and looks like you're doing what I need for a new development. I have a dumb question... How do you get the input parameters, i.e. The cellid, mnc, mcc, and lac? Any response would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
What do you mean "how do we get" them? Anyway, let me encourage you to look at Fire Eagle - http://fireaagle.yahoo.net - maybe that will serve you better. Let me know (private email) if you need an invite.

it be possible to post some statistics on here or sent them in an email?

Hi! I am looking at this API - and also the rules of how I could use

1. If I setup a service which is free to its users (e.g. students) but
has also an arm where money is generated from (=commercial aspect, but
not from these students) - can I use this API?
2. How many cid/lac/mnc/ mcc vs address pairs are already in the DB -
