Thanks for the reply. This page states nothing about how to actually
add information on a cell id!? Is this feature currently not working?
I would like to know how to update zonetags with new location details
for a given cell id not already stored :(

Hi,
   I am new to zonetag. I have obtained the userkey required to use
zonetag api. However, I am not quite sure if using zonetag api is:
1) tied to flickr api, which i have used before
2) tied to yahoo search api
3) is completely independent of both

I was not able to find this information on the web, nor some
libraries, or maybe i overlooked. Would it be possible for someone
here to throw more light and/or to point me to some examples of using
zonetag api? It would be a great help.
Thanks
Dhiraj

Hi Stan

If you'd like to get a sense of your surround I suggest giving TagMaps
(http://tagmaps.research.yahoo.com/) a try. It uses Flickr geotagged
images to get an idea of what are the noteworthy tags in an area. There
is a full GeoRSS feed that you can play with at
http://developer.yahoo.com/yrb/tagmaps/

Thanks Jeannie, I signed up for fireeagle. Looking forward.

Being super accurate is desirable, but already just getting a sense of your surrounding area is a start, so you be in be in a SF and you you get the relevant wikipedia topics that are close by in your desired language.  My experience is that using cell-ids is already a good enough, did some experiments with it myself, just dont have the capacity to select all the cell ids for NYC for example where i live and good open collection is nowhere to be found. I am thinking about using whatever i have available be it a wireless accesspoint id, cell id, remote IP address or gps and make the best out of it. Should be doable. Do you at yahoo ever go that mixed approach?

Best,
Stan

good idea, just pipe the zonetag into the geocoder, better then nothing.

gsmloc seemed to be rather dead, too bad, they might have sold their data,
very useful data.

I am co-founder of semapedia.org. Besides QR-code we want to write a locative wikipepdia reader that tells you the surrounding articles based on your location. I guess we will try the piped approach for now.

Thanks much,
Stan

Point taken. Is there a service/database avaiable that allows me to get lat/lon for a cell-id?

In the past I used

http://www.cellspotting.com/webpages/cellspotting.html

but I am not sure if they are still operating.

Out of curiosity, do you know how many cell ids there are in the US?

I understand, isn't that violating

"Anything we can do, you can do too."

So if I submit/update a cellid lat/lon via cellsubmit to the system, I
won't be able to get it out again?

Hi Stan

The ZoneTag API does not return lat/long for cellid information. However
you can pass the city/state/zipcode information you get from ZoneTag
through the Yahoo Geocoding API
(http://developer.yahoo.com/maps/rest/V1/geocode.html) to get the
lat/long. Hope that helps

Hi Richard

In the particular example that you are looking at you did not get any city or zip because we have never gotten on that reading before. The country is calculated from the MCC value and thus all queries should get at least a valid country name. The city and state values are only returned if we have had any users (either ZoneTag or API) tell us that cell XXX corresponds to city YYY.

If you use a know LAC like 6045 instead you will get  a result set http://zonetag.research.yahooapis.com/services/rest/V1/cellLookup.php?apptoken=7cd8517ef5e21e7634318dec50e8c619&cellid=4995&lac=6045&mnc=380&mcc=310 The multiple results are due to the fact that this is a large cell and users have spotted it in several different zipcodes. The list is however ranked by order of probability and you should be able to take the first full result as the correct answer.

Finally the API is designed to work with all GSM systems - as long as you are using the cellids of a Japanese GSM network it should work fine. We dont have much data from Japan right now but we would love it if you could start adding it to our DB  :-)

Hi Haim

You can find the documentation for the ZoneTag web services at http://developer.yahoo.com/yrb/zonetag/index.html

The cell submission API in particular is at http://developer.yahoo.com/yrb/zonetag/submitcell.html

Was also caused by the broken location parser - should be working now.

Fixed - there was a problem with the location parser which also caused
the bad error messages.

Probably not related to the fact it was submitted twice. Definitely sounds like a bug, and we'll take a look at it as soon as we can!

I have the same problem:

I first tried to submit info about the same cell with
city=Basingstoke
state=Hampshire
country=United Kingdom

but cellLookup was returning:
<rsp stat="ok">
<Location>
<Country cell="current" source="user" >USA</Country>
<State cell="current" source="user" >England< /State>
<City cell="current" source="user" >Basingstoke< /City>
</Location>
<Location>
<Country cell="current" source="user" >United Kingdom</Country>
</Location>
</rsp>

Then I tried again with country & city only:
&cellid=8674135& lac=43082& mnc=10&mcc= 234&city= Basingstoke& Country=United+ Kingdom

but cellsubmit returns "i" in all fields, and cellLookup does not seem
to return anything different.

Maybe it is somehow related to submitting twice about the same cell?

Whoops, ignore this. I mixed up the mcc and mnc. But I suppose it would be nice
if the err
code was set rather than left blank, possibly setting error code 13 or 14 as
defined in the
docs.

Cheers,

Alastair

Hi,

I've encountered an unknown error while attempting to perform lookup on a cell:

Parameters passed to cell lookup:
mcc=33&results=3&lac=1389&mnc=234&cellid=2352

Response:
<rsp stat="fail"><err code="" /></rsp>

Cheers,

Alastair

Hi Rahul,

That particular cell id seems to be reporting back more information
than before, but I can't tell whether that information was submitted
by myself, or seemingly from a Yahoo's system (similar to what I get
from FireEagle).

I tried submitting information for a different cellid "1137, 108, 33,
234" with only the City and Country set, but it also does not seem to
register with ZoneTag immediately:

Submitted:

city=London&country=United+Kingdom&mcc=234&lac=108&mnc=33&cellid=1137

Submit Response:
<rsp
stat="ok"><location><latitude>i</latitude><longitude>i</longitude><city>i</city>\
<state>i</state><country>i</country><zipcode>i</zipcode></location></rsp>

That looks a bit weird since latitude and longitude are there in the
response even though I didn't submit it. Also all the values are "i"
rather than the values I had submitted. Maybe my submission isn't
being accepted?

Thanks,

Alastair

Hi,

How does submitted cellid to location information get integrated with the
ZoneTag API?
For instance, I submitted some latlongs along with the cellid-lac-mnc-mcc for my
current
network "Orange UK" using cellsubmit.php, but cellLookup.php will not return
these
latlongs?

Submit Params:
country=United+Kingdom&mcc=234&longitude=-
0.03548&lac=108&latitude=51.509365&mnc=33&cellid=10826

Submit Response:
<rsp stat="ok"><location><latitude>51.509365</latitude><longitude>-
0.03548</longitude></location></rsp>

Lookup Response:
<rsp stat="ok"><Location><Country cell="current" source="user">United
Kingdom</Country></Location></rsp>

Am I doing something wrong?

Cheers,

Alastair
